Part 1of 2 I took this video showing the antenna in action and how directional it is. (Which is what you need to concentrate the radios power in one direction). In the video it shows me in my back yard transmitting 5w (146.835mhz) to a repeater that is located about 40 miles away at 6300′ elevation. I am located at about 1400′ elevation and there are hills directly between the repeater and me, so with a rubber duck I would not have been able to make contact. Few weeks ago I made one antenna for portable based on Comet CHA-250 with broadband transformer described in Martin’s G8JNJ document. On the base of antenna is transformer made from four “TDK Ferrite core noise filters” and seven meters of 0.75mm2 isolated copper wire. This antenna is mounted on fishing rod 7m long with transformer mounted on third element (3m) and rest 4 meter of rod is used to make coil for 7 meter copper wire from transformer. So, first 3 meter is RG-58 cabel then transformer and then 4 m coil with wire antenna. Distance between turns in the coil are 20-25mm. Results are great for the purpose and sets very quickly and requires little space. It working from 80m-6m but it is the best from 40m-10m bands. Great thing with this antenna is that it don’t need antenna tuner !!! Our working condition for this video: Rig is Yaesu FT-897D with antenna tuner (tuner not used) We worked on 100W of power on vertical portable HF multi band antenna. Testing a lightweight HF magnetic loop antenna made from 7 metres of RG58 coaxial cable. Contacts were made on 40 and 20 metres during the Lighthouse Weekend. It uses just three main parts: the coax itself, an air-spaced variable capacitor (approx 50 – 100pF max) and a T50-43 ferrite toroid. The toroid is threaded over the coaxial cable. RF from the transceiver is fed via a 2 or 3 turn winding over the toroid (experiment with this for lowest SWR). The coax inner is left unconnected; only the braid is used here. The loop is for low power use only – it will take 10 – 20 watts before the variable capacitor arcs over. Performance is, as expected, somewhere between a smaller pedestrian mobile magnetic loop and a full sized wire antenna. It would be improved if the variable capacitor was a low loss type and the coaxial cable was soldered straight to it. While there’s enough information above to make your own, it’s worth checking out G4FON’s website ( www.g4fon.net ) for similar loops. My loop is closest to his Version 2.

Made this in a few hours, and it is FAR superior to any of the antennas used in the past. Put against GP, HLLY, and Commet 5/8 wave, and has lower swr’s across the whole band. The other one is for 2 meter. It is also homebrew. It works better than all the others I used. (It’s modified too)

I decided to resurrect my vintage Avanti Sigma 5/8 Wave CB antenna which was stored in various places around the house. After cleaning the loading coil and connections I installed it temporarily on the fence for testing. SWRs are flat on channel 0 (26.955mhz one 10kc channel) below regular channel 1. SWR readings on channel 40 are 1.7 :1
