This video shows the use on a 1970’s era HP Spectrum Analyzer, capable of measurements to 110 MHz, to measure Return Loss of an antenna. The 141T Spectrum Analyzer system has the 8552B IF and 8553B RF Sections (plug-in’s), and is connected through a special cable assembly, HP p/n 08443-60009 (see www.glkinst.com to an HP 8443A Tracking Generator (early nixie tube version) The 8443A allows the operator to determine the frequency of any position along the trace via a marker and also provides the incident RF signal to the DUT (antenna in this case) through the 8721A Bridge. This was state of the art for that era and how network analysis was done using this 141T Spectrum Analyzer. These particular units were all built at HP in Santa Rosa, California. The 8721A Bridge is used to seperate the reflected signal from the incident signal and thus measurement of the reflected signal’s amplitude changes over a frequency sweep. See HP Application Note 150-3, available at the HP Memory Project Website, at www.hpmemory.org for more information. Note: the 8721A bridge labels appear on both sides but differently. The connection label LOAD is SOURCE on the opposite side, INCIDENT is actually REFLECTED oppositely, and SOURCE is LOAD on the opposite side. I had it setup to measure REFLECTED but that side is facing the table! Darn! Oh well!) The SA is set to 300 Mhz bandwidth, .5 MHz scan width per division, input attenuation at 20 dB, and a scan or sweep time per division of 5 milliseconds

My ATAS-120A was acting quirky and locking up so I disassembled it for inspection. BE VERY CAUTIOUS if you attempt to do the same. The ATAS antenna needs a very good RF ground to function properly. Most problems that people encounter with them are ground related. Another issue is that the center pin of the PL-259 style base connector it uses is slightly smaller than other center pins resulting in a loose electrical contact with the antenna mount. One way to correct this is to bend the prongs of the mating connector inward slightly so that a good contact is maintained. Thank you KB5WIA for posting a very good guide on this antenna!

The following is a straight-forward listing of the stages required to construct a shortwave antenna:

Get hold of a simple broom-handle. Altrnatively you can make use of a dowel rod or ready-made plastic tubing that is available from a plumbers or builders merchants The thickness of the of rod is not paramount and anything from about half an inch or better will function perfectly well Create a relatively large base to hold the rod vertically. The base should be heavy enough to keep the rod vertical at all times Get hold of an aluminium disk with a minimum 6 inch diameter. A disk of approximately 12 inches seems to be the optimum size. The disk will provide a capacity hat termination and will assist in reducing any noise pick up Source a quantity of no.16 PVC plastic covered standard wire. If this is not possible then an good alternative is no.16 or no.18 enamel covered copper wire. If this is not available then standard no.18 speaker wire will suffice With one end of the wire connected to the disk, begin winding a consistent coil around the rod. The coils should sit next to each other and be bound tightly to the rod. On completion of binding the rod you should then terminate the wire either by connecting it directly to your antenna tuner or by a proprietary wire connection terminator. Ensure that the wire extending from the base of the rod is as short as possible On completion you can protect your antenna by coating it in proprietary insulation tape or by giving it several coats of protective spray For optimum performance ensure the antenna is placed close to a window, in a garden or veranda. Ensure that the connection from the base is as short as possible You can use it your antenna without a dedicated tuner, however there will be a lack of enhanced core quality if the antenna is not attached to a receiver via a bespoke dedicated tuner Your new antenna is now geared up for use This simple wire-wound antenna will provide a great basis on which to trial your experience. Providing a ground link to both the antenna and tuner will optimise the system. A simple method of creating an artificial ground is to connect a minimum 5M strand of wire which you allow to fall on the floor of the room or garden

This atricle demonstartes what may be achieved with a straighforward home-made antenna, especially if you are limited in your space and budget

Ceramic Wafer: ceramic powders and sintering processes directly affect the quality of performance. Now the market ceramic used is mainly in 25 × 25,18 × 18,15 × 15,12 × 12. Ceramic chip area is larger, the larger the dielectric constant, the higher the resonant frequency and the better is the receiving. Most of the ceramic wafer design is square, to ensure that the resonance in the XY direction is consistent, in order to achieve signal receiving well-distributed.

Silver Plate: the silver layer of ceramic antenna can affect the resonant frequency. Ideal frequency of GPS ceramic should fall 1575.42MHz on the nose, but the antenna frequency is vulnerable to affect by the surrounding environment, especially built in the machine, Therefore, have to adjust the silver-coated form, to make sure the frequency remained at 1575.42MHz .

The Feed Point: ceramic antenna collects resonance signal through the feed point and then sent to the backend. Since the antenna impedance matching reasons, feed is generally not in the center of the antenna, but doing minor adjustments in the XY direction. This impedance matching method is simple and has no extra cost. Move only in the uniaxial direction is called a single partial antenna, do move in two axes are referred to as double-side.

The amplifier circuit: to bear the shape and size of the PCB ceramic antenna. As GPS has the characteristics of ground bounce, when the background is 7cm × 7cm without a break earth, patch antenna performance can be to the limits. Although restriction by the appearance of the exterior structure and other factors, but try to maintain a considerable size and the same shape. Amplifier gain selection should be with the back-end LNA gain. Before the required signal input of Sirf’s GSC3F, total gain shall not exceed 29dB, otherwise saturated signal will result in self-excited.

The MFJ-941E is designed to match virtually any transmitter to antenna, including dipoles, inverted vees, verticals, mobile whips, beams, radom wires, and others fed by coax lines, balanced lines or a single wire. An eight-position antenna-selector switch provides versatile antenna selection. The MFJ-941D will handle up to 300 watts of transmitter RF output power. The MFJ-941 employs a cross-needle meter so forward power, reflected power and SWR may be read simultaneously. This tuner is in “MINT” condition. The tuner is very clean both inside and outside it’s cabinet. The cabinet has be taken down to bare metal and repainted with RUST-OLEUM “Hammered” finish. All of the position “dent” switches have been sprayed with DeoxIT D5. This spray is very popular and rejuvenates, lubricates and protects electronics. DeoxIT states more than a Contact Cleaner and chemically improves electronic connections. All of the tuner’s components have been tighten and re soldered (as to need) to restore as of just leaving the factory. The tuner shows no appearance of any burnt conditions from any type of arcing either RF output or lightning. The meter lamp can be powered by a 12 Vdc source. Use a 2.1 coaxial plug with the center conductor of the plug connected to the positive and the sleeve connected to ground. Please note: This cable and plug has been constructed and will come with the tuner. The Meter Lamp ON/OFF switch will activate the meter lamp. The MFJ-941E utilizes a cross-needle meter
