I am using only 1 watt of RF energy..yes, only 1 watt, this is sometimes called QRP. Using an FT-847 Yaesu radio with Donner Interface, with a RG8X about 100 foot coax, to a 2.5 to 1 talented Balun, to a 40m loop suspended only 6 feet in the air. I dug holes 28″ deep through soil and clay, then positioned concrete cylinders. Sequentially I then tapped each 3 foot long 3/4″-10 threaded dowel into the bottom of the hole surface in relation to each corresponding hole on the hinge plate. Once all threaded dowels were established, I poured quickcrete into each cylinder to the brim. I joined all four of the inner exposed concrete forms by digging a pit in the center and filling it too with concrete. After the concrete solidified, I mounted the hinge plate on the foundation. I actually screwed on some 3/4″ nuts n each threaded dowel so that I could manually adjust the height of each corner should there be any mistake (inevitably there was). I placed the bottom tower section on the hinge plate and secured it with provided screws on the hinge brackets.

Yaesu 817ND with LDG z817 Tuner that’s NOT working correctly.

Measurements made at the input and output of an antenna tuner at 20 meters. The antenna in this video is the G5RV Jr (short version) that is cut for 40 meters and up. I find the Wikipedia description a very good one on “Antenna Tuner”.

How many birds does it take to change the SWR? This is just a bit of fun looking at the very small but consistent changes that a group of swallows make to the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) on my home made 20 metre antenna. It’s not a scientific experiment but the results were, not surprisingly, reasonably consistent as it’s a well know fact that you can use capacitive loading to alter the characteristics of an antenna. I did toy with the idea of arranging bird food at the ends of the elements were their capacitive effect would be more noticeable but I didn’t want to encourage the crows as if they decide to land on the beam en masse as I think they would do more damage than just transiently shift the SWR! Thanks for watching, if you’re interested in radio you’ll find some hopefully interesting items amongst my other videos, there’s a No19 set, a Spy Radio, some vintage radios and the construction of the 20 metre beam featured in this video. Kind Regards …Andy gw0jxm
