Demo of LD-1B software-defined radio (SDR) hardware with Winrad SDR software. This was recorded around sunset (5:55 PM) local time, 22:55 UTC on 29 December 2010. The antenna was an MFJ Super Hi-Q Loop which tunes 7 MHz – 21 MHZ. The antenna is horizontally mounted at about 25 feet above ground. The soundcard was an E-Mu 0202 sampling at 192 kHz. The demo begins on 20 meters, with the LO set to 14.0625 MHz and the receiver tuned to some PSK-31 signals around 14.07 MHz. Next, some CW signals, first using the SSB filter followed by the CW filter. The display is zoomed in to facilitate tuning with the narrow filter. Back to the SSB filter, and the LO is shifted into the 20 Meter phone band. Next, the AM filter, and WWV at 15 MHz. Next, 40 meter CW, first using the SSB filter, then demonstrating the CW filter’s capability to separate weak signals from nearby strong signals. Finally, a little shortwave broadcast listening in the “tropical band” This is outside the tuning range of the antenna, so signal levels are somewhat lower than one might expect. For more information about the LD-1B, go to www.lazydogengineering.com To order an LD-1B, got to shop.lazydogengineering.com The fluctuations in signal level and some of the buzzing and clicking sounds that are heard intermittently are due to retuning the magnetic loop antenna when the LO frequency is shifted. Once the homebuilding bug bites, you’ll be using a whole new set of jargon: acronyms, color codes, numbering conventions, parameters, measurements and more. Here are some questions about the many interesting methods — and short-cuts — we use to describe our electronic components.
1) Which sequence represents the resistor color code?

Here I modified an old Radio Shack ground-plane VHF/UHF scanner antenna for better reception on GMRS UHF frequencies (467.xxxmhz) as well as monitoring my counties local fire department which is 151.385mhz. I used standard welding-rod which solders very easily. I made all the radials as well as the verticals elements slightly longer than the original. Sealed the antenna with standard hot glue, to help keep out moisture. Thanks for watching!

www.hamradiocrazy.com – In this video I show the ground radial wire I use, and talk about laying a radial field under my Hustler 4BTV vertical ham radio antenna.
This video shows a few ways that you can monitor your ham radio transmitter with an oscilloscope. Look at the RF carrier, the carrier envelope, the amplitude demodulated signal, as well as linearity “trapazoid” patterns (please see below). It shows a simple circuit I put together for a local ham radio club meeting and presentation. I put this circuit together to show the radio club members examples of a sampler and a amplitude demodulator. Of course, since these were built onto the same “demonstrator” board with a common RF input, the linearity can not be measured with this since any non-linearity in the output would appear in both sensors. This is indicated by the notes in the video. In order to truly measure the non-linearity of an amplifier or a modulator/exciter, the X-input would normally be driven by the baseband signal, or the demodulated input to an amplifier, etc., and the RF output would be sensed with the sampler and applied to the Y input of the scope.

The KBRF-350 is an RFI filter used to suppress electronic interference caused by motor speed controls. These controls utilize SCR or transistors that switch on and off rapidly causing high frequency interference pulses. These pulses are easily transmitted through the AC power lines which can then enter other equipment wired to the same line. In addition once the interference is allowed to conduct through the power lines the wires become radio antennas which actually radiate electromagnetic energ

The coax was cut to length, pl-259 was soldered on & a Tram dual band antenna was screwed onto the NMO mount.. The antenna was tested with an analyzer & all SWR checks were good on VHF & UHF.. The IC-M36 has Clear Voice and Voice Boost, Which has a sub-microphone on the rear panel that inverts phase and cancels out ambient noise from the main microphone. As a result, the IC-M36 reduces the affect of background noise (particularly trebly noise) from the transmitted signal and makes it easier to catch voice communication. When in an engine room or high noise environment, the sub-microphone detects the ambient noise and the IC-M36 automatically increases the volume output to suit the sur
