My Answer to Portable, Take anywhere, Disaster proof amateur radio communications. This is a Yaesu 857 Radio set up with a pair of 12 volt motorcycle batteries and a solar or car charging controller. I can take this any where, if there is sun or a car battery I can use this HAM radio indefinitely.

You are getting quite a bit of feedback on this project. Seems that some of it is very constructive, may assist in taking this project to next level. I am interested in purchasing one of these set ups after you have completed noodling it.I believe there would be several people among my friends that would be interested as well. I would be willing to send you some money to stimulate your economy and get a place in line. Please PM me and let me know if this interests you.

    Thanks and Great Job!

Sealing the box with metal tape defeats the purpose: opening and using the radio. I do agree that the box is marginal as an EMP case though. The duel painted surfaces do not make a great contact area. The lid and box edges need to be cleared of paint and some sort of metal gasket material installed.

I would also suggest putting the batteries on opposite ends of the box to facilitate balancing for transport.

Excellent concept sir. As and old time “tin knocker” I can tell you that you are going to need and air intake as well. Otherwise will/might have some fan cavitation. i.e. the fan is still running, but running to fast as it’s not actually pushing any air. A rule of thumb is you need as much air going in, as you do going out. 3″ computer fan should be fine that size box as well. Sorry if this has already been said. Too many pages of comments!

absolutely, I was going to have an intake at the opposite end of the exhaust fan in the face of the “instrument panel” so yea, Im aware… that little 3 inch fan moves a ton of air in that little box… thanks for your comment

I dont think that is needed as the lid overlaps the bottom by about an inch. thanks for watching and the comment though!

Nice setup indeed I would add a laminated fold out calender wink wink. Next project should be a portable guitar amp and cd player for those long SHTF days and nights round the campfire. Maybe a DVD playa 2 playa of course in a Super EMP Proof Dillion enclosure yo ;-D

Awesome. My childhood friend’s dad was a UPS overnight truck driver who always drove a different truck each night. He built a similar setup to take his communications and entertainment from truck to truck. He also tucked a pocket pistol in the bottom of the box under a hide away panel for shtf. Cool project bro.
