Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 09, 2012

Emmy Award-winning Fourth Wall Studios has released “The Hunt” as the first installment of “FLARE”. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, “FLARE” is a world of darkness and fear, but also of humanity and hope. Each day, a mysterious light briefly illuminates the transformed world. But is the light another threat or is it salvation? Does it mean hope or death for earth’s last few inhabitants?

Within this world, there are many stories, some of which will explore the answers to questions about the world, but all of which will explore the lives of the people in it. In “The Hunt”, two families become deeply connected by a single thoughtless act. Burke (Jamie McShane, Sons of Anarchy) is on the hunt for the people who took everything from him, while Dale (Mark Moses, Mad Men) and his son Sid will use the dark in any way they can. It is a tense game of cat and mouse in a post-apocalyptic landscape.

“FLARE” was created by Jim Stewartson, CEO of Fourth Wall Studios. “Having developed this world for nearly three years, it’s so exciting to finally be able to share a part of it with our audience.” said Stewartson. “It was such a privilege to be able to work with our director Dan Brown and this incredible cast. And as we release more content, we will have created something like an open-sourced story world. I hope that audiences everywhere find this glimpse of the world of “FLARE” intriguing enough to want to create their own stories set in this universe.”

FLARE: The Hunt is available for free now on Fourth Wall Studios’ platform, http://www.RIDES.tv

As part of the cutting-edge technology of the RIDES.tv multi-screen platform, “FLARE” uniquely offers:

A global view of the world through the amateur radio conversations of secondary characters.
Deeper insight into each character by experiencing their inner thoughts.
An open-source philosophy of storytelling, where the audience has the opportunity to contribute to the world of “FLARE”. Where will we go from here?

FLARE: The Hunt is directed by filmmaker Dan Brown. Written by Olumide Odebunmi & Tolu Awosika. Produced by Jackie Turnure. Jim Stewartson, Zach Schiff-Abrams, Sean Stewart and Elan Lee serve as Executive Producers.

Viewers can access all of Fourth Wall Studios’ content including “FLARE” for free at RIDES.tv. Like RIDES.tv on Facebook, follow RIDES.tv on Twitter, or add to your circles on Google+.

ARRL Reports 2012 Growth Of 30% in Amateur Radio Licensing

The first quarter of 2012 (January-March) saw a high level of Amateur Radio license exam sessions, producing an elevated influx of applications for new licensees. According to ARRL VEC Manager Maria Somma, AB1FM, these numbers outpaced the 2011 first quarter results by 30 percent. This uptick does not only apply to new applications; there was a 6 percent increase in the number of upgrades, too. “Statistics over the last 13 years reveal that these are the highest numbers that we’ve ever seen for the total number of US amateurs,” Somma said. “Now there are more than 704,000 radio amateurs in the US.”

Amateur Radio Breaks 700,000 Barrier

Somma said that there are currently 704,236 licensed Amateur Radio operators in the US. “We broke the 700,000 barrier in October 2011 for Amateur Radio,” she explained, “and the numbers continue to progress higher. Broken down by license class, at the end of March there were 14,352 Novices, 343,597 Technicians, 161,220 Generals, 57,393 Advanced and 127,674 Amateur Extra licensees. It’s an all-time high for Technician, General and Extra class licensees, as well. Additionally, our total number of licensees across all three classes has grown each year.”

For the first quarter of 2012, Somma said that the ARRL VEC test session statistics are the highest first quarter results since the FCC’s restructuring of the license requirements in 2007: “Our exam session activity and exam elements administered are elevated. As the total number of licensees across all three license classes continues to grow each year, the demand for Amateur Radio exam sessions also grows. In turn, the number of amateurs who want to be Volunteer Examiners and who want to teach Amateur Radio classes is also rising. The ARRL VEC has seen a spike in the number of applications from General and Extra class radio amateurs who want to give back to their community by serving as examiners and instructors. This is a positive trend in Amateur Radio that we expect will continue over the coming months.”

Dick Van Dyke, Barry Goldwater, Arthur Godfrey and many others extol the virtues of amateur “ham” radio in this vintage film. I converted this old and somewhat damaged 16mm film to video tape many many years ago when the technology to do that was rather archaic. I have now converted those old video reels to digital movies. Not the best quality but still quite amusing. note: I have corrected the title here on youtube. this is “The World of Amateur Radio” NOT “The Ham’s Wide World” as I had originally posted. I do have the “Ham’s Wide World” also uploaded here.

Charlestown, Ind. (PRWEB) October 19, 2011

According to child development expert Dr. Lillian Juadiong, reading stories to kids before bedtime is beneficial in more ways than one. She states that this activity will give children a head start when they go school as it will improve their listening abilities, communication skills, vocabulary and creativity. There are many books that can be read before bedtime but the best options have to be the ones that teach valuable lessons in a way that captivates a child?s imagination. A Family Adventure is an appealing choice for bedtime storytelling. Written by Terry Rowe, this book has meaningful lessons embedded in an imaginative storyline.

The tale begins when a little girl named Jennifer finds nothing to do one summer day. Her Grandpa decides to tell her a magical story about a loving family, including a ghost, who lived in a castle. One day, they decide to take a walk in an enchanted wood and there they discover some peculiar things. First, they find a baby tiger in the clearing and, later, they see two giants fighting. The story unravels to how the family finds a magical potion that gives light to their strange discoveries and changes their lives forever.

?A Family Adventure? combines delightful illustrations with rich storytelling to charm its readers, especially kids. Parents will also appreciate the lessons and family values that this magical adventure teaches.

This book will be featured at the New York Library Association Book Exhibit in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on November 2-5, 2011.

For more information on this book, interested parties may log on to http://www.Xlibris.com.

An attempt at using microcontrollers for amateur radio applications. The Freetronics KitTen kit I built came from their stall at the 2012 Melbourne Mini Maker Faire. Microcontroller projects involve software, hardware and the minor miracles that must happen before computers will talk to one another. Hence they have traditionally been for advanced electronic hobbyists and professionals only, because of the many things that can go wrong. Arduino promises to make microcontrollers simple, cheap and accessible. Has it succeeded? Watch this video as I, who has a record of nothing but failure in these things, attempts to get a project going, and then design some of his own. At one point the quest almost got derailed. An account of similar symptoms and the builder giving up was read. However a solution was found and the development could continue. Radio projects featured include a beacon, an automatic CQ caller (configured as a QRPp transmitter) and a foxhunt transmitter, all with their own customised code. I recommend the kit featured ( www.freetronics.com ). It came direct from Freetronics though Jaycar also stock a good range. The January 2012 issue of Silicon Chip magazine has a good beginners’ introduction to Arduino and I suggest also getting this. NOTE: A question that those used to building from scratch will ask is whether you can buy the chip used ( Atmel ATmega328P 28 pin ) seperately, program in this unit and then insert into your own circuit board. You can, but need a
