Trying the Baofeng-UV5R Plus 2Meter ham Radio, and showing how to find repaters

New SR3LX repeater in Poznan – Poland.

(PRWEB) October 24, 2005

Describe Online star (http://www.describe-online.com) Terry Robinson is once again seeking sponsorship for his entry in this year’s CQ WW CW (Morse Code) amateur radio contest. This event takes place for 48 hours during the weekend of 26 – 27 November.

The object is to establish two-way contact with as many stations throughout the world as possible on six frequency bands. Terry will be taking part from his home in Glasgow, Scotland where he made 1870 contacts in the same event last year. All money raised will go to the British Computer Association of the Blind “Eye T 4 All” project.

This year, with deteriorating conditions, but hopefully with an improved station, Terry will be seeking sponsorship per contact. To add a bit of fun, sponsors are invited to guess Terry’s final score – the closest guess will win a copy of our new “Missing Persians File”, otherwise known as “Guide Cats II” CD.

Find out more about The Missing Persians File CD at

http://www.bcab.org.uk/cd/guide-cats-2-sleeve-info.htm

About the Event

The scoring for this event is quite complex, the number of contacts made is only loosely related to the final score. Contacts within Europe score 1 point, whilst those to other continents score 3. Apart from being divided into countries, the world is divided into 40 zones and it’s possible to contact each country and zone on each of the six bands. The final score is the number of points accrued through contacts, multiplied by the number of countries and zones contacted on all bands. Last year, Terry scored just over 700,000 points for his 1870 contacts.

Eye T 4 All – A major Project of the British Computer Association of the Blind (BCAB)

Blind and partially sighted people are being left behind when it comes to information technology. Computers and internet connections can be more beneficial to them than for sighted people.

Many blind and partially sighted people experience social isolation. This results from difficulties in getting out of their homes,

finding their way around, and getting information including communicating with other people. Take, for example sending a letter. This presents huge challenges for blind people. Difficulties include: Writing the letter, correcting it, getting an address on to an envelope, putting on a stamp (the correct way up!), finding a post-box and getting to it. When a reply comes, some one must be found to read it.

Blind people just love email. It can be read out immediately through speech synthesis, and replying is just the press of a key. The vast amount of information on the world wide web can replace a personal library of unreadable print books. Information technology has so much to offer blind people. The “EyeT4All” programme is being developed to show blind people what is possible, to enthuse them, and point them in the right direction with affordable solutions and training. The work so far has included seeking and evaluating suitable solutions. This has involved evaluations according to a template

indicating usability and affordability. The programme will not give a theoretical technical approach, but a practical solutions based presentation. A small pilot based on a limited product range, has been run. A one day presentation has been defined and developed.

The programme will be rolled out across various UK locations in the Autumn. Links have been established with local voluntary societies for the blind who are keen to host the days.

All this cannot possibly happen without money. Over £20,000 has already been raised but we need to carry on raising funds to enable this project to benefit as many of the 2 million vision impaired people in the UK alone we can reach.

Brea, CA (PRWEB) December 23, 2011

The inaugural flight of Southern California-based solutions provider The IMS Company’s seat-centric inflight entertainment system RAVE™ took place on December 9 onboard a SriLankan Airlines A330 aircraft flying from Colombo to Male, according to IMS’ chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joe Renton. The event climaxes nearly four years of planning, development and production which began during the market downturn in 2008.

The airline will equip two A340 and five A330 aircraft, with options for more, and joins a long list of airlines opting for the IFE system.

RAVE capitalizes on airlines’ desire for increased reliability and decreased weight and complexity—circumstances exacerbated by that downturn, according to Renton. “Rising fuel costs and the need to eliminate excess weight continues to characterize IFE requirements today,” says Renton. “For a company like ours, reversing decades of a completely different system architecture at a time when airlines were reducing the amount of money spent on IFE was a calculated risk.”

“SriLankan is proud to be the Launch Customer of RAVE, giving priority to today’s industry needs by initiating the installation of a high quality audio video on demand system, which is also low-weight, on board its medium- long haul flights” said the airline’s Head of Engineering, Priyantha Rose.

SriLankan Airlines was the first of several airlines to choose the revolutionary systems architecture that stores content and playback functionality independently in each seatback display unit (SDU), thus eliminating the single-point-of-failure scenario that potentially compromises headend-centric systems, as well as eliminating distribution boxes and seat electronics boxes.

In this architecture, the headend contains the System Control Unit (SCU) which loads future content to the SDUs in the background while passengers watch current content that is played back from an SD card in each seat.

The result is an architecture that is inherently more reliable while significantly lighter. “RAVE accomplishes reliability through redundancy,” says Renton. “Every seat has its own store of content and playback functionality.

SriLankan’s award announcement was followed by airberlin, Brussels Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines, Air Transat and Air Tahiti Nui. “We feel very encouraged by the tremendous market response and will have other award announcements to make very soon”, said Renton.

Host Gator Review: How Host Gator Screwed Me For Three Years

How Host Gator Screwed Me For Three Years

Host Gator techs royally screwed up by blocking ALL Google’s bots from indexing over 50 of my domains during the past three years. No Google bots equals no Google listings equals no Google visitors. Read this to make sure your sites are not also blocked.

Here’s my open letter to senior management at Host Gator regarding this fiasco:

To: Senior Management at Host Gator
Re: How Host Gator Screwed Me For Three Years
Date: March 23, 2015

Reference Ticket Numbers: MIU-34587770, BCU-35170995, CCL-17654111

I have been a customer of Host Gator for over six years and have two accounts with your company.

It turns out that for three of those years, or half the time that I have been your customer, your company has cost me an immense amount of time, energy, effort and money because one of your techs royally screwed up by blocking ALL Google’s bots from over 50 of my domains during those three years.

Three Years Without Google

As I’m sure you know, this prevented Google from indexing any of my pages on more than 50 sites for three years.

No matter what I tried to do during those three years, I simply could not get Google to index my pages. Not being an SEO expert, it never occurred to me that one of your techs would have put a block in the root directory for my entire account!

The entire reason I went to so much effort to design, program and publish over 50 websites was to generate traffic for my message and/or to get my sales pitch out and/or to get my ads in front of eyeballs to make money from that account.

With Google bots completely blocked on all accounts by Host Gator, none of that can happen.

None of that did happen.

Three years of completely wasted effort.

My First Facebook Posting About Being Screwed By Host Gator

This is what I’ve already posted on Facebook on March 17, 2015 about Host Gator to my 3,543 friends regarding this fiasco:

Tech Rant On: I just spent two days trying to find out why Google would not index one of my new sites. Google Analytics, Google Web Master Tools, etc. all gave me 403 errors that nobody could figure out on the forums or from Host Gator.

I finally just mentioned something about the techs at Host Gator had done something to my server several months ago when I was having a major problem with foreign bots invading and totally crawling several of my sites while taking my server CPU usage to 100%.

That clue seemed to be the magic elixir for the Tier 2 Techs at Host Gator.

Turns out that the Host Gator tech back then had wrongly included in my server’s home directory’s .htaccess “SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent “^.*Googlebot” bad_bot” – which we all know means that Google was banned from even visiting, let alone indexing, my site… And, wait for it… And also blocked Google from all 50+ domains I have on that one Host Gator server! And, this has been going on for several YEARS.

I share this here in case anybody else ever runs across this kind of problem with their own sites.

I’ve been using Host Gator for years, and they really do a great job, but this is inexcusable.

If this had been my direct employee, we would be having a conversation about their continued employment right now. Actually, by now, the conversation would be over.

I am not amused…

Tech Rant Off.

Open Letter To Host Gator Management

Many of my friends are asking about the current status after seeing my above posting.

That’s why this is an open letter to the upper management of Host Gator and will be included as a separate webpage on one or more of my sites with the title, “How Host Gator Screwed Me.”

That way I can easily provide a simple link on several of my Twitter accounts to the nearly 7,000 followers I have there – along with posting updates to my 3,500 friends on Facebook.

Your Customers Are Not Necessarily Webmaster or SEO Experts

I ask that you put yourself in my shoes and see yourselves putting that much effort into building over 50 sites to end up finding out three years later that some royal screw up by your hosting company techs completely interfered with you reaching any of your goals on any of your domains for all that time.

Like many of your customers, I am not an SEO expert by any means. Up until about a week ago when I started teaching myself about Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools, I had no idea about any of this stuff.

Your customers do not expect to be sabotaged by your staff just because they are not Webmaster experts.

Good News / Bad News

The good news is that my pages are now being aggressively indexed.

Google Site: shows that many of my sites that were reporting zero pages indexed now have over 6,000 pages indexed in some cases!

The bad news is that I get a Terms of Service Warning from Host Gator after they have completely blocked all updates for all 50+ sites because of high CPU usage! I would assume the high CPU usage might, just maybe, have to do with the World, including Google, trying to do three years of catch up on 50+ sites all at one time!

So, after Host Gator blocking all indexing of 50+ sites for over three years, now Host Gator wants to penalize me again!

Once again, I am not amused.

Token Liquidated Damages

Here’s what I want from Host Gator as partial, token liquidated damages for all of the above problems you have caused me during the last three years:

  1. Refund me all payments that I’ve made on both of my Host Gator accounts for the last six years I have trusted you as my hosting provider.
  2. Do not charge me anything on either of my Accounts for the next six years.
  3. Move me to faster servers where I don’t use 100% of your CPU time.
  4. Don’t embargo, suspend, cache, etc. any of my domains until, together, we’ve had a chance to fix whatever the problem is with any specific problem domain.
  5. Search the root domain of EVERY customer of Host Gator to ensure that this Google bot block is absent and not causing the same kind of devastating impact on other user accounts that I’ve been suffering through for over three years.

The above token liquidated damages are nowhere close to compensating me for the damage that Host Gator has caused me.

I see it as a token gesture on the part of upper management at Host Gator that it will own up to its mistakes, make the above token gestures and make sure it is a whole lot more cautious about causing this kind of problem for its customers in the future.

The World Will Be Watching For Your Response

During the past six years I’ve recommended your service to many of my consulting clients and even signed up as an affiliate of your company. So, I have probably nearly 12,000 folks who are going to be very interested in seeing how you, as a company, handle this fiasco.

I look forward to your response. Be aware that I may post some, or all, of it to any webpages I have dedicated to this matter on several of my domains.

One very pissed off customer,

Robert

I received a ‘freebie’ Diamond X-30 2m 70cm Base Station omnidirectional vertical antenna from a local ham. This is Part 1 of my evaluation of this antenna where I check Return Loss on both bands.

Part 2 will follow when I get some time to set up a field test for looking at the actual gain over a reference dipole when it is mounted on the top of a mast as well its pattern at 2m and 70cm when it is when mounted on the side of a mast (or tower leg) at various spacings. Whether we use a dipole array or a collinear antenna, a side mounted antenna will have a pattern that will be affected by the spacing between the antenna and tower leg or mast upon which it is mounted.

Carrington Event Comparison Versus Recent Solar Storms

How how bad have the solar storms of the past decade when compared to the Carrington Event?

In this video, astrophysicist Dr. Tamitha Skov does a great job of comparing the big solar storms of the past decade with the yet to be surpassed Carrington Event.

CarringtonComparison from Dr. Tamitha Mulligan Skov on Vimeo.

The solar storm of 1859, also known as the Carrington event, was a powerful geomagnetic solar storm in 1859 during solar cycle 10. A solar coronal mass ejection hit Earth’s magnetosphere and induced one of the largest geomagnetic storms on record. The associated “white light flare” in the solar photosphere was observed and recorded by English astronomers Richard C. Carrington and Richard Hodgson.

Studies have shown that a solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would likely cause widespread problems for modern civilization.

The solar storm of 2012 was of similar magnitude, but it passed Earth’s orbit without striking the Earth.

If you have been on the ham bands this past week on HF, you already know that we have been hit with a massive G4 geomagnetic storm that is the worst in many years. The storm was so bad that it was causing power fluctuations and creating electric shocks for friends in Australia.

This is one reason that I have a Faraday Cage with backup electronics and radios.

For me, with a simple end fed longwire antenna, even JT-65 signals were few and far between for three days this past week.

This report is from one of my favorite astrophysicists: Dr. Tamitha Skov:

Space Weather activity has been at record levels with the Sun firing an X-class flare, more than 10 M-class flares, and launching a solar storm that caused a G4-level (NOAA’s term for a severe) geomagnetic storm at Earth over St. Patty’s day.

Aurora has been seen clear down to France and Iowa, USA, and clear up to Perth Australia. Catch up on the latest information regarding this storm, see some gorgeous aurora pictures, learn what else the Sun has in store, and how it will affect you this week.

Amateur Radio is just one of many Qualifications available to T.S. Sheffield Cadets through our staff.

Tried to download the NOAA18 weather satellite picture with the RTL2832, but the signal didn’t last for very long. Probably need a better antenna which is circularly polarized.

NOAA stands for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and their satellites transmit live weather images.

Currently using an outdoor J-pole tuned for around 130Mhz.

RTL SDR (RTL2832) is a low cost software defined radio. You can buy a RTL SDR dongle here http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009U7WZCA/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009U7WZCA&linkCode=as2&tag=youtube0ae9-20&linkId=RR5VUVIXLMIB43M

(PRWEB) February 13, 2003

The 28th Annual Trenton Computer Festival (TCF) will be held this year on May 3rd and 4th. at the New Jersey Convention Center in the Raritan Center, Edison, New Jersey. The theme for this year will be “Wi-Fi”. This year’s keynote address will be given by Marge and Bruce Brown (of Extremetech), the first time in 28 years that a husband and wife team has given the keynote.

Wi Fi is taking the world by storm. The WiFi brand has been so successful that what was originally a certification standard for one wireless networking technology is now commoditized to the point that many use the term for all wireless technologies and devices. While many segments of the PC business have struggled for the past two years, wireless networking continues to extend its reach into small and medium businesses.

Together, Marge and Bruce Brown have tested, evaluated, and written about literally hundreds of SOHO (Small office, home office) networking products, including all current wireless and wired networking technologies.

TCF, the oldest and longest running personal computer show, will have ninety (90) plus speaker sessions and forums, hundreds of indoor and outdoor (flea market) exhibitors, product demonstrations, ham radio testing and a special exhibit area all under one roof. For more information visit the website at: tcf-nj.org or tcfshow.com.

The not-for-profit organizations sponsoring TCF include The Amateur Computer Group of New Jersey (ACGNJ), Princeton Chapter ACM/IEEE Computer Society, Computer Society, IEEE Princeton Chapter/Central Jersey Section, Computer Education Society of Philadelphia (CSOP), Central Jersey Computer Club (CJCC), New York Amateur Computer Club and the College of New Jersey Engineering Department Scholarship Fund.

Admission is $ 15.00, advance tickets available on line for $ 10.00 using PAYPAL.

A repeater is used to expand the coverage to all floors. Basically, when you transmit on your portable radio, the signal goes out and is received by the repeater and is re-transmitted or “repeated” at a higher power to cover a greater distance.

ANTENAS DE MI RADIO TRANCEPTOR MUNDIAL DX

*****EDIT***** It looks like YouTube likes to darken video’s for some strange reason when you upload them in Apple .MOV format. The video is much brighter when viewed in any media player like Windows Media Player, VLC, and QuickTime. I’ll see if I can fix it using YouTubes editing filters.

Just testing out my new Nikon Coolpix P510 that I picked up a couple days ago. The video being shot is in 720p in low light conditions in my amateur radio shack. The video was directly uploaded to YouTube in Apple .MOV format, there has been no editing or processing of the video.
