ISS028-E-020581 (3 Aug. 2011) — Russian cosmonauts Sergei Volkov and Alexander Samokutyaev (out of frame), both Expedition 28 flight engineers, attired in Russian Orlan spacesuits, participate in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) on the Russian segment of the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 23-minute spacewalk, Volkov and Samokutyaev moved a cargo boom from one airlock to another, installed a prototype laser communications system and deployed an amateur radio micro-satellite.

My trip to Trojan Electronics was mostly a success. I managed to get:

82pf / 820pf capacitors
1.5KΩ resistors
22μH / 1.0μH ‘molded inductors’ (apparently, more commonly known as chokes)

The 1.0μH choke is really supposed to be 1.2μH. I’m not sure if this will cause a problem — I see some parts lists that say 1.0μH is A-OK.

The only thing missing now is the XTAL — and a thing to mount all these parts on. I’m more and more considering rolling my own PCB. If I’m going to go in, I might as well go head first, right?

KC7IIB /AG

Thats right /AG…

To all of you non hams out there, that means that I have now successfully passed the FCC Element 3 Amateur Radio exam, thus making me a General Class license holder. The /AG is the way I have to identify when using my new privileges until the FCC receives and processes all of my paperwork.

Recently the FCC changed the licensing requirements for Amateur Radio eliminating all morse code requirements. I had already passed my Element 1 exam many years ago which covered a 5wpm morse code exam. However with the new change the code test (element 1) is no longer required. This has caused a renewed interest in Amateur Radio and has removed a barrier that was preventing many people from upgrading in the past. For me, it just kind of worked out as I already had the Element 1 exam behind me… But at any rate here is to being a General now…..

1206 SMT resistor compared to penny

Traditionally, hobbyists have used through-hole components. Virtually all commercial products now use surface mount components. Hobbyists are slowly being dragged over to surface mount parts. The 1206 resistor, to the right of the penny, is just .12 inches by .06 inches. It is one of the larger surface mount sizes. The NorCal Dummy Load uses 44 of these 2.2 kOhm resistors.
