Wow what a difference between the rigs Simon. I suppose it shows how ten (or thereabouts) years of development makes all the difference. Of course, the rigs are chalk and cheese as a result but also I suppose one has to take into account the different nature and relative costs of both rigs. One is a deicated HF rig with 6m thrown in, the other is a cheaper “shack in a box” which covers HF and up to 70cm. Nice video. 73’s James G0SDB.

Did you have the IPO (pre-amp) turned off on both the 897 and 590? Might make a big difference; I run IPO off on my 857d below 17m, and it tracks well with both my TS-2000 and TS-690sat.

    Great videos, btw! 73/k5zia

thanks for the comments. IPO was OFF (so pre-amp on!) on the FT-897D, however, the preamp was OFF on the 590s – so interesting comparisons – and agreed should have compared like for like. Thanks for the comments and glad you liked the videos – 73 !

you did hi cut and low cut on the audio and the NR on the 590 but on the 897 you didn’t do any changes so not a good comparison so far, sorry to say

Hi – thanks for your comments. If you watch the videos I do make comment in there that even with the IPO selected (pre-amp off in other words) on the 897d, audibly the two radios are still like chalk and cheese. And that with the NR and DSP and some other filtering on the 897 selected it still no where near matches the RX on the TS-590.

The 590s is totaly different!! You can’t compare! You should compare the 590s to the FT-950, the are both, a HF radio, same price (+/-). You should compare the 897d to the Kenwood ts-480, they are compareble! These two not!!

If the Pre Amp was on, of course you will get more noise on the 857. Especially on 160m. Plus you dont activate the DNR (noise reduction) on the 857. If you turned off the Pre Amp, brought down the RF Gain I bet you would be much closer.

Hi there… To me there’s no problem comparing two HF radios like these ! A comparison is a comparison… Either radio is good it just depends what and where we’re using those rigs ! To compare (as suggested) two radios that are into the same price range and features I’m pretty sure differences outside the measuring lab are tiny ! I like the FT-897 as well as the TS-590S but I will simply not using them for the same thing ! 😉 Cheers, regards and thanks for your time. Eric de ON6CV.

Convinced me – I have a borrowed 897D and used to own an icom 7000. The icom 7k was leaps and bounds ahead of the 897, and the ts590s looks to be even further ahead than the 7000. Looks like this will be my shacks new hf radio 🙂

I think it’s great to see a comparison of two very different radios. It shows what to expect when considering the differences between radio classes. The 590 is roughly twice the price of the 897, so here a prospective buyer can really see the difference in performance and usability.

    Good show.

You have the preamp turn on (no IPO icon on display!) that means more noise ..and also the DSP is OFF on 897! In my opinion is not big difference between two radios in HF. The 590 is nice, good looking but not the best…and is much expensive …don’t worth. The comparison is not fair…seems like the winner is know before you turn on the radios . I can understand that…you must justify your money spend 🙂 -73!

Establishing dsp profile that is optimum for the operator utilizing the 897 has been a complaint, requiring more menu-hopping to get adjusted. Good work on your first posting here! Enjoy some great electronics. (k5cqe)
