This is my Yaesu 950 in it’s temporary location. There’s a LOT to learn on this menu-driven beast. I’ll update as I go. (Purple platypus NOT included)

HAM is a great hobbie and possibly one of the best assets will need in the future. But holly crap, it’s takes a lot of work and research. A whole new world. I’m relying on you guys to educate us!

You need directional beam antenna. Right? Is that a 6 meter? When I was 8 yrs old I held a novice license, just missed the tech license by one point theory, I was at the General level on code! At that time I was the youngest in the country. Back then you had to know morse code, now I heard you don’t. Is that true? Also, you had to retest every 2 or three years so you had to keep proficient at code. What level are you now Toad? Congrats my friend, nice outfit! Whats a rotor cost now days?

I carry a Tech. No code, it went out in 2007 ( I think) This radio covers 10-160. Check Norms Rotor Supply for prices. That’s where I got the rotor I have on my 11m PDL. For this, I have an Alpha Delta EE trapped dipole.

There’s some log stuff required (more for YOUR protection is something goes wrong) and you must announce call sign etc..it’s pretty self policing. That particular HF rigs runs around $1500 bucks.

That is an awesome piece of equipment. Back in the day it was the big tube radios with crystals you plugged in. Man technology has lept a long way since then. My dad did have an old heathkit rotor that would click and light up. He just marked his orientation on the dial and that was built to last. He mad a pivot stand with a heavy duty winch hand crank to raise and lower the about 75′ tower. Pretty cool how easy it was going up and down. Great set up my friend! Take care
