Video showing how I accomplished the simple hardware mod on the Yaesu VX-8DR using my wife’s nail cuticle cutter–no desoldering. Now have TX on GMRS and FRS.

Prepper Bear illegal transmit options at your finger tips. You should be
ashamed for showing how to ruin a radio.

Nice video Bear. Shot very well with out any distractions, got right to
the point with good clean camera work. I just got this radio with the mod
last week myself and love it. Glad you showed a test of the mod, gave me
the idea to test it with my old scanner and worked perfect. Also if you
didn’t know there is company out of Ca. selling high cap batteries on ebay
pretty cheap. Not yaesu’s but they are 2000 mAh and Great for a few back
    ups.

Thanks for watching…still studying manual on all the bells and whistles
this unit will do. Added adapter and hooked it up to my attic 6ft tall
Diamond X50 dual band antenna–picked up many stations/very sensitive
reception. Yes, already did the battery upgrade. Ordered the newest 7.4
volt 2400mAh pack from Batt America. Much thicker but a perfect/click fit.
We’ll see how long it lasts…the stock pack only went about 5 hours.

people keep saying it is illegal to have a ham radio that will also
transment on GMRS and FRS. Can someone tell me why and show me the law/reg
that says so? I can’t seem to find it.

You forgot to mention that when you talk on the GMRS channels, you have to
have a GMRS license for your family, and must use that call sign when on
the GMRS frequencies instead of your HAM call sign. As far as FRS, I’d
stay off of those frequencies altogether. I don’t think you can turn the
output power down enough to make it legal. FRS is for kids use – extremely
short range. GMRS has good range, and with repeaters, it’s even better.
BUT, you need to make sure you use your registered GMRS call sign, and
    abide by those rules.

First off this is very sad. I don’t know if you have your FCC license or
not, but I will assume you do, Im not sure why you would do something that
would infringe on the legalities of having your FCC license and mod a radio
that would illegally transmit on GMRS/FRS. If you dont have your FCC
license for these radios, then I guess that explains a lot. Im also quite
shocked that you would act like such a 5 year old with all your “bite me”
comments. Seriously? I thought you were more mature than that. If you are a
licensed “ham”, its people like you who give the rest of us good guys a bad
name. It would be better if you just kept your infringing to yourself
    rather than sharing it.

Very Disappointed. Illegal instruction teaching people how to violate
amateur and commercial radio rules and regulations. Thank Heavens for the
    FCC.

This is so illeagle for you to the point your unit is a felony as of now.
only Hams can mod there radios. And at that only TX on out of Ham bands for
    emergencys only.

your better off with a real frs gmrs radio i have a vx8dr moded leagly and
a frs/gmrs radio (try to use the vd8 on frs/gmrs bands and program them and
than what do you have for other bands.

think before you do these things. Preping is fine if your not being
    crazy..

You are deceitful. While you might be willing to violate FCC rules, not all
of your viewers are. You should clearly explain the legal issues of this
mod and let your viewers decide for themselves whether they want to violate
    the law.

From a SHTF point of view, I am perfectly OK with people owning
transmitting radios for which they are not licensed to operate… provided
they do not transmit UNLESS they are in an emergency situation. I don’t
care what the law says, in an emergency situation, people should do what is
    necessary to save lives.

The radio you purchased is very expensive (did buy it legally?). “Prepper”
Bear, if you have that much money to spend, why wouldn’t you fully
“prepare” yourself by getting properly licensed and then buying FCC
approved radios? Do you believe anarchy should rule the airwaves? If that
is your position, you should have the courage to say so. By withholding
these details, you are deceiving your viewers. Are you hoping they will
unknowingly break the law? Is that your objective, to create anarchy? Are
your viewers mere pawns in your anarcho-capitalist scheme to create
anarchy? What motivates you to cavalierly deceive your viewers?

Let me guess. Your answer will be, “Bite me.”

Do Not do it, it will change the programming of the radio reducing power to
about 2 Watts. This is not a jumper it is a resistor of about 86 ohms
