Grant, for this video I used a Sanyo Xaxti HD 720P VPC-TH1 camera. I shot in HD, but my Sony Vegas editing computer does not have enough steam for HD rendering. I was able to edit, but rendering was going to take over 24 hours. So, I gave up and rendered this into a non-HD video. Camera isn’t too bad for about $150! Slow to auto focus, very small, real glass zoom, no ext mic, but I was impressed how well the mic worked at Dayton. Might be time for a new editing computer. Randy

@fronkenpoop i agree people are all like “oh woo hoo DSTAR, DSTAR woo hoo hoo” ther is only one dstar repeater in my area that i know of and i have no uinterest in it.
It gets pretty warm, but there’s a crystal oven near the rear of the unit, I’m told. It’s really frequency stable. I’ve subjected mine to some long ragchews at full power, with no problems at all. It seems to be ok with its own heat. The RX is fantastic. No extra filters to buy, the DSP really pulls them out of the noise. Nice radio.

Well, power out on VHF is 50W and less on UHF.
the meter is a 100W meter..so sounds right to me!

Actually, I have a theory. On the closest inhabited planets, the beings actually “hear” in the ham radio frequency range. To them, we are Gods. So, I’m about to grab a new rig and I was torn between this and the TS-2000, though they are very different in size that was not the main concern, which is quality and ease of operation.
Thank you for helping me decide on the Kenwood TS-2000. Now F’n way I’m going to play hexadecimal games, multiple menu items is enough.
For $250 range, Kenwood TS-520., a wonderful analog workhorse which is still well loved.
$500 range, Icom IC-751A, there’s no better rig for the money. Look it up on the Sherwood receiver test site, you’ll be amazed how good it is for a 25-year old rig, even when compared to newer rigs, but it’s 10-160 HF only.
A Yaesu FT-100D is your next best bet for a quality all-mode/ all band removable face mini-rig. Just make certain the serial number begins with a 1,2, or 3.

The TS-2000 is the 500 item lunch buffet. The 7000 is the good restaurant.
The 7000’s RX is an order or magnitude better. It can deliver signals that
the 2000 doesn’t even know are there. I use the 2000 only for VHF/UHF.
Sure, it’s easy to operate, but you are rewarded for learning the 7000.
Thanks for the information. I did enter the hidden menu however under the TX settings I was not able to make any alterations. There was no change with turning of the main tuning knob. I wonder if there is a lock that has to be released. Do you know if there is a toggle or what has to be done in order to modify the TX settings? The problem I am having is my 100% power out into a 1:1 SWR measures at only 60 Watts on HF. I’m wondering if this TX Adjustment could remedy that?
Two questions: is this a European version 7000 and are you on 10 meters testing the power output?
No it’s not the European version and I was not on 10. In fact the power level of around 60 Watts out on 20, 40, & 80 meters and that’s into a 1:1 SWR presented to the radio by a Palstar tuner measured both on the Tuner’s cross needle meter and an external diamond cross needle meter so I very much trust the 60 Watts out. One other observation I did note was that the power level adjustment was not linear across bands.
OK… the 7000 is very sensitive to Vcc… it’s power supply voltage.
The difference between 12.6V and 13.8V is dramatic. If you are running 13.8V
and getting 60W across the bands, then your radio has a problem. It isn’t a matter
of the factory settings being wrong. To be dead-sure, I’d try another radio with that dummy load/meter set-up.
Hello Everyone,
I have been researching ALL transceivers and the two best systems for Base or Mobile are the FT-897D and IC-7000.
The FT is very portable with fixed TX wattage, the IC is less portable and variable 2-100 watt, 2-50, 2-35, 1-40, 2-20, 2-14 depending on which meter(s) your on .
Both radios cover the same frequencies. The IC is $1300, the FT is $1000.
