I was in the shack doing some antenna testing and decided to test the receive capability between the IC-7000 and the IC-9100. I was quite (and pleasantly) su…

Surprised? Why? That a $3k base rig outperforms a mobile is only to be expected. The IC-7000, like the 706 series before it, is designed to do exactly one thing well: Be small. 🙂 73 DE N7OE

In the manual for the Icom 7000 it states to turn on the Pre-AMP to get an accurate S meter reading. An Icom 7000 with the pre-amp off gives a similar reading to the 9100 with the attenuator on.

You’ll notice that from a RX audio point of view they sound pretty similar in regards to the lack of background hiss you’d get with one being weaker than the other.

I conquor with Conor! You also actually can hear the audio is almost as good as on the IC-9100 even with the IC-7000 showing no S-meter reading which indicates therehas to be something wrong with the s-meter reading. No doubt been doing week signal long enough to notice that a station with no s-meter reading shouldn’t sound as good as that station did. LOL! The IC-7K has been known to having s-meter issues ,but put that pre-amp on and signal would compared to the 9100. Try that next vid! 73!

I’ve RTFM’d; I’ve missed the “supposed to be on when using VHF/UHF” – perhaps someone could give me the page in the manual where that is the case… The closest reference I could find is in the spec sheet at the end of the manual (page 148) – where the specs say “with the pre-amp on”…

Another video with the pre-amp on. Want to see the S-meter reading. S-5 on the 9100 and nothing on the 7000.
