LIQRP – Long Island QRP group meeting in a nice shady part of a park in Long Island. QRP technically means "reducing transmission power to a level low enough to maintain contact" It also became to mean the fanatical devotion of operating and perhaps building of radios the transmit 5 watts or less. This includes a pride in assembling very portable amateur radio stations.

I have taken my 2 meter portable out with me on Lee many times. The closest receive station for the Milwaukee 91 (146.91 – ) repeater is the main site which is about 25 or so miles from the area I ride in. My ham radio friends affectionately call Lee “Lima-Echo-Echo” the ham radio horse. One day I plan to use my Kenwood mobile radio as a cross band repeater and then I will take a 440 hand held out with me and see how that works out. The portable I took with me is a Yaesu FT-270 2 meter monoband. I have a “tiger tail” wire attached to the outside ring of the SMA antenna connector which provides a little better ground plane.

U4 was fun. Found the obsure not that says to bend all the pins underneath so the part can be solders. The pads were meant for a different part than is currently shipped with the kit.
The 1206 parts are easy to do. Only 3 Ics are scary, the PIC, U2 and U3. The rest are not fine pitched if you have done any other SMT kits.

This a review of a Yaesu FT-817 Solar Powered Go Pack. I built this solar powered case for my FT-817 radio so it can be used portable without the worry of power and keeping it self contained. It’s all contained in the case so it can easily be taken to a picnic, on holiday or attached to the backpack for a QRP adventure. The cut-and-folded portion of the headliner becomes the primary mounting surface, which secures the radio surprisingly well under the compression of the supplied mounting bolts. The supplied double-sided foam tape comes in handy for test-fitting and holding the face steady while you bolt it in. A small nail comes in handy for making pilot holes for the bolts.
An ample amount of hot-glue supports the front end of the face/mount and keeps the assemly at the correct angle. Placing the headliner at an angle at the corner of a table, then resting the front on the radio’s face itself provides enough weight to hold everything in place while the glue hardens. Care should be taken not to drip hot glue down through so it is visible from the other side, though it does clean up easy if you do.

This video show how handy it is to work PSK-31 on an iphone/ipod using RDP remote control. This is using an RDP program on the iphone to remotely control the computer in the shack which is running Ham Radio Deluxe 5. In my case the shack is in a building not connected to the house, so this is a really handy way to work digital modes such as PSK or RTTY anywhere in the house via wifi to the shack laptop. The combination of pskreporter displaying perfectly on the iphone browser, and using hrd remotely makes PSK easy to work from any chair in the house. The RDP client I used for the iphone is called Jaadu RDP, but there are others available.
