The 2009 Report on Digital Signal Processors (DSP): World Market Segmentation by City

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports th

Digital signal processors constitute an important aspect of signal processing in many high performance applications and end-user devices. Keeping the power dissipation as low as possible in a reconfigurable architecture that enables dynamic reconfiguration of hardware modules is quite a challenging task. This paper examines one approach towards low-power programmable DSPs that seeks to solve this problem by matching the model of computation of a given task with a well defined architectural granularity without adverse consequences on performance.

Some problems are challenging to solve using traditional DSP techniques, but FPGAs can often provide an easier and more efficient solution. Examples of applications best suited to FPGA implementation range from simple digital filters through digital radio receivers to high performance video and imaging systems. Of course, there are many other advantages and disadvantages to the FPGA platform, but in many cases the net result is reduced development time, cost, and time-to-market.

This is the final project presentation video for our digital signal processor, which we created as a final project for our Embedded Systems course at the University of Iowa College of Engineering. As stated in the video, our circuit is built around an ATMega88PA. We use an external ADC and DAC to handle the audio signal. The guitar used to demo the effects is a heavily-modded “Fullerton” brand guitar with a Dimarzio Super Distortion from the late 1980s in the bridge position wired with a coil tap and volume control only. The “half-stack” amplifier shown in the guitar demos is a Crate “Flexwave” SS amp set to its “clean” channel with a flat EQ and no effects. Theoretically, this means it did not color the sound significantly. It was used merely to amplify the signal coming out of our circuit’s power amp. Images used in the video are credited within. If you own either of the images we used (“Roadrunner and Coyote” or the “Pedal Board”), and you do not wish for them to be used in this video, please let us know and we will remove them immediately. Thank you, and enjoy the video.

High Level Explanation of Digital Signal Processors (DSPs)

Digital Signal Processing techniques improve signal quality or extract important information by removing unwanted part of the signal. The introduction of general purpose microprocessors in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s made it possible for DSP techniques to be used in a much wider range of applications. The microprocessors such as the Intel x86 family were not suitable for the numerically-intensive requirements of digital signal processing, and the increasing importance of DSP led major electronic manufacturers to develop DSP chips, the design of which met all the requirements of digital signal processing.

DSP is a programmable chip and is capable of carrying out millions of floating point operations per second. Typical DSP application fields are audio signal processing, video signal processing, image processing and telecommunications devices. DSP is the basis of many technologies including mobile phones, personal computers, video recorders, CD players, hard disc drive controllers and modems.

The application of digital signal processors in cellular phones is very significant. Signal compression, an important application of digital signal processor, is used in cellular phones to permit a larger number of calls to be handled simultaneously within each local “cell”. The signal compression technology helps to communicate to one another by seeing them while talking. This facility is available with the help of a computer monitor, small video camera and a conventional telephone line linking them together. DSPs can be used in applications that require a high computational speed. Such applications include computer video boards and specialized co-processor boards designed for intensive scientific computation.

Digital signal processors account for a substantial proportion of the world market for electronic devices. And therefore, the leading electronics manufacturers have invested heavily in DSP technology.
