How to tune in a side-band station using on a 1970 Zenith Royal-7000-1 Solid State Trans-Oceanic Portable shortwave radio. ———————————————————————- SINGLE SIDE BAND RECEPTION Single Side Band transmission, a recent development in the communications industry, provides a more efficient use of radio frequencies. Receivers designed for reception on the standard AM bands would reproduce SSB signals as a distorted sound, however, this Trans-Oceanic can be used to receive clear and understandable SSB messages in the Following manner: * With the BANDWIDTH in the NORMAL position, turn the radio ON and tune in channel as you would any AM band station. * Tune in and adjust the TUNING CONTROL to the center of the distorted sound. (This should be the point of maximum audio output as well as maximum deflection on the TUNING METRE.) * Turn MANUAL GAIN CONTROL to ON (clockwise). * Advance the VOLUME CONTROL near maximum. * Turn BFO Control ON (clockwise) and set to the center of its rotation. * Adjust MANUAL GAIN to desired volume (instead of VOLUME knob). * While receiving SSB it is recommended that the VOLUME CONTROL be kept near maximum and that the level adjustments be made with the GAIN CONTROL (as mentioned previously). * Adjust the BFO Control for an intelligible sounding signal, then for a more natural tone. * When correctly adjusted, rotate of the BFO Control toward the center of its rotation will cause the pitch of the voice to

Vintage ARRL ham radio movie. Converted from 16mm film to video tape many years ago, and now from that ancient VHS to digital. Enjoy the flickering screen, and especially the funky organ music backgrounds! heavy focus on morse code, which of course is no longer a requirement.

Ham Radio 10 meter band is wide open to many Countries around the world. This is the best it has been for many years. It’s a great time to get your amateur radio license if you don’t have it, and a great time to once again try the 10 meter band. It’s smokin! You only need a Technician class license to talk on 10 meters. A great entry level, then you can upgrade from there if you desire.

It’s not a detailed explanation of the miniVNA but hopefully it gives you an insight as to how it functions. My 80metre inverted V comprises of two 59 foot 6 inch lengths of wire fed with a air-cored balun and the 20 Metre inverted V comprises of two lengths of wire each approximately 17 foot long fed by an ugly balun. This video shows the use of emulating software that makes HRD believe it is controlling an FT-847. The information in the emulator registers is used in turn to send data to to the FT-736. My intent is to eventually implement the emulator in a small microcontroller that goes in line between between the 736 and the serial port controlled by HRD. 73 DE KA6BFB

LIQRP – Long Island QRP group meeting in a nice shady part of a park in Long Island. QRP technically means "reducing transmission power to a level low enough to maintain contact" It also became to mean the fanatical devotion of operating and perhaps building of radios the transmit 5 watts or less. This includes a pride in assembling very portable amateur radio stations.
Shown is an antenna tuner – much smaller ones can be built and are available commercially for our low power use.

I have taken my 2 meter portable out with me on Lee many times. The closest receive station for the Milwaukee 91 (146.91 – ) repeater is the main site which is about 25 or so miles from the area I ride in. My ham radio friends affectionately call Lee “Lima-Echo-Echo” the ham radio horse. One day I plan to use my Kenwood mobile radio as a cross band repeater and then I will take a 440 hand held out with me and see how that works out. The portable I took with me is a Yaesu FT-270 2 meter monoband. I have a “tiger tail” wire attached to the outside ring of the SMA antenna connector which provides a little better ground plane.

Our amateur radio enthusiast buys another ham radio instead of attending to the needs of his family. His wife is not pleased. No offense to anyone intended, even if you are guilty of this. Enjoy.

This is my third visit as a guest ham radio operator aboard the USS Pampanito that is docked at Pier 45 at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. It is great to be in a historic submarine and to give ham radio operators a contact from a very unique ham radio station. USS Pampanito (SS-383) is a World War II Balao class Fleet submarine museum and memorial that is open for visitors daily at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Pampanito made six patrols in the Pacific during World War II during which she sank six Japanese ships and damaged four others. Operated by the Maritime Park Association, Pampanito hosts approximately 110000 visitors a year and is one of the most popular historic vessels in the country. In addition to day time visitors, over 15000 kids a year participate in Pampanito’s educational day and overnight programs. Pampanito is a National Historic Landmark. The Pampanito is being restored to a specific point in time, late summer, 1945, to represent the height of WW II submarine development. The Maritime Park Association has scoured the country in search of missing equipment and spare parts. Almost all of the missing items have now been replaced and much of the equipment on board has been restored to operation. For more information, a virtual tour and a podcast please go to the USS Pampanito homepage www.maritime.org
