This is the small interface board I threw together to connect a Satoshi DV Node Adapter based repeater to an Icom ID-RP2C D-Star controller. It’s built around a 74AC541 Line Driver Buffer integrated circuit with an inverter for the RE/COS signal from the DV Node Adapter.

Join The Alexandria Radio Club, W4HFH, for 2012 Field Day from Armistead Boothe Park in Alexandria, VA. This year, the club ran as 7A adding a PSK31 station to the mix and splitting the 40m and 80m phone stations. This year, the 15m stations was completed powered via solar panels and battery using Goal Zero Boulder 30 Solar Panels and a Goal Zero Yeti Solar Generator. Special thanks to the City of Alexandria for coordination of the park facilities.

K6AA Field Day 2007 demonstration of PSK31

I was messing around with my Arduino board and figured out how to make a cheap portable electromagnetic field (EMF) detector. It only requires a led, 3300000 Ohm resistor, and wire. As I approach an EMF the led gets brighter, so I can locate the source. Messing around with the code and resistor values I can change the sensitivity of the device; when I first made the EMF detector I could only find one place to stand in my apt where it didnt go off. I am working on getting a commercial EMF detector that spits out quantitative values so I can calibrate my version and have it do the same on a LCD. *UPDATE you can decrease the sensitivity of the device by making a loop with the antenna. Also the code can be found on my website, aaronalai.com

This week, Surfin’ gets ready for ARRL Field Day and ISS pass-overs.

NASA introduced their all-new NASA app for iPhone and iPod Touch. It is the “first major redesign” of the app since 2009.

Being a long-time fan of what goes on in the outer space, I downloaded this free app as soon as I learned of its existence and I have not been disappointed.

As I wrote about in last month’s column, everyone finds his or her own niche in Amateur Radio. It can be as simple as having an mobile rig in the car that you might turn on every once in a while, doing nothing but listen to numbers stations or regularly working the Amateur Radio satellites, or “birds.” For me, I find fun in everything!

Rob works his Yaesu FT 847 on field day

www.kcomm.biz This video shows how to install a NMO type antenna mount..It was mounted on a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck at Kcomm the ham radio store in San Antonio, Tx..I aquired my brother Tim KE5CFZ to help me.. The NMO mount requires a 3 hole which was drilled thru the roof just in front of the cargo light assembly..The coax was then run under the headliner, down under the inside trim, then under the kick panel to behind the drivers seat.. The coax was cut to length, pl-259 was soldered on & a Tram dual band antenna was screwed onto the NMO mount.. The antenna was tested with an analyzer & all SWR checks were good on VHF & UHF.. Thanks for watching..73s, Mel, WA5UTK,

This video is slightly under two minutes and demonstrates how a contact is completed on the HF band during a radio contest. This video was shot during the 2002 Field Day event sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). There were two clubs that were involved with this Field Day: the Central Ohio Amateur Radio Emergency Service (COARES), and the Voice of Aladdin Radio Club. The callsign used was W8FEZ.

This video will show you how to connect DV-Dongle and install the software, check your sound.

Well, due to family commitments, I was not able to follow up with last years success with Field Day, however, I did manage to squeeze in a few Qs and give away some points. What you see here is my Icom IC-703+, the matching AH-703 (4 foot) whip antenna, which is connect to the back of the 703 using a 90 degree PL to SO-239 adaptor. You will also notice that I have 2 lengths of 15 foot long wires attached to the ground nut on the rig which are being used as a counter poise. The location was the main floor living room of my home. I was also using battery power with an average RF output of about 7 WATTS… Can you believe that I made contacts fairly easily with this set up IN DOORS? Anyway, thank you for your continued interest and I look forward to chatting with you soon! for more information please see the detail at www.PortableQRP.com www.portableqrp.com 73 Bob VE3UK

Turns out I had stumbled onto Amateur Radio Field Day 2005. I’d never heard of this before! Apparently ham radio operators emergency preparedness skills and play a game to make it fun. I was curious so I talked to this guy for a few minutes and he explained everything, except he couldn’t really explain how one scores points. I kept asking questions, but I guess I wasn’t asking the right questions.
