I’ll be honest with you – this isn’t the ‘Introduction to APRS’ you’ve been looking for… the one where Bob Bruninga WB4APR, the mode’s inventor, explains in step-by-step detail just how to get started and use APRS. Such a guide doesn’t exist that I know of, and the ones out there that come close are quickly out of date. What this is… is another version of Bob’s APRS talk, with bits and pieces of what APRS is, how it started, and where it’s going (or where it can go if Bob can talk you into doing more than watching little car icons drive around on a map). You will learn a lot… just not what you were hoping to get (sorry!). This is one of three talks Bob gave (all variations on the same theme) at the 2011 ARRL/TAPR DCC in Baltimore. At the end of this video is an informal discussion between Bob and John Gorkos AB0OO about John’s development of the AVRS, the Automatic Voice Relay System, another new development in APRS. John details AVRS is the 2011 DCC Sunday Seminar Part 3. I apologize in advance for the video quality. It’s not terrible, but it’s going to be hard to read some of the text on the screens. I was using ARVN’s ‘old’ camera, a standard-definition camera set for wide-screen, recording in the one-hour, lower quality mode. All my high-def cameras (all three of them) were tied up in the main DCC presentation room.
