@jjc032681 A hand held unit for 2 meter I use, can go from Colorado
Springs, to Grand Junction, using repeaters. Line of sight on simplex? I
have used an FT-50R to achieve up to 30 miles with a little elevation. They
    really work good.

I’m curious as to what the maximum range is on the average hand held unit.
Any one? I used to have a hand-held CB radio that did pretty well,
    especially with a little “skip”.

I like my dual band walkie, I don’t use the VOX on it though. Handy to have
when out and about and you don’t want to drill holes or slap a big ol
antenna on a nice new car. thanks

This is all crap An HT for a new ham is not a good idea. THey do not have
enough power, the atennas are crap and the batteries do not las long
enough. ANd the remark about ease of using an HT in a car is a bunch of
crap. This is same crap the ARRL has been telling new hams for years. THe
best radio for a new ham is a mobile radio for two meters or a dual band
mobile for two meters and 440. about the only thing an HT will do is get
new hams frustrated and out of the hobby. .

@outatime1955 They dont know the difference i guess….. Not suprisingly
most ordinary people think CB and Ham are the same. I hear “oh my dad used
to talk on his ham back in the 1970s to the truckers.” Or “i didnt know
people still used ham.” and the really good one “I thought they did away
    with the ham lisense.”

@Pugragger why do you assume the people watching this has passed the exam?
Maybe they’re just interested in becoming a ham and know barely anything
    about it.

I’ve noticed that on his other videos. Does he really mean Citizen Band? He
also mentions ‘Broadcasting’ a few times, but I thought HAMs are not
permitted to broadcast and have strict transmitting practices.

it depends on weather you use a repeater or not, and the repeaters coverage
area. repeater generally 25 to 50 miles, maybe greater. Simplex on an HT,
about 2 miles or so. Range is also a factor in terms of the antenna your
    using.
