Had a long night at my graveyard shift and knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep during the day so I came up with the brilliant idea to drive up to W1AW. Awake fo…

LMAO! YAESU are a bunch of assholes. My favorite YAESU rigs are the FT-101’s, FT-1000’s and now my FT-817. So it’s not personal but just telling it how I see it. The entire vid couldn’t upload so I do mention it’s not the first time I operate those rigs. It just takes $12,000. to get your moneys worth and even then if you remember they had issue’s right off production line. Agh!!

12 grand for a Ham transceiver is insanity! Unless you can afford one, of course. For now, i’ll have to use my lowly Pro3!

@AudiophileTubes – Pro3 is a fantastic rig. I’ve had like three of them and never had an issue with any of them. Love that rig! 73!

On the 5K there’s a IPO switch that doubles the sens if in AMP2 that is normal in AMP1. AMP2 overloads the RX if not trying to read a weak sig. on a clear band. I bet you had AMP2 on. I have had many radios and the RX and filtering is the best I have ever seen. Yep, even better than my coveted 1000D. BTW, worked W1AW a couple weeks ago and the audio was horrid. Could have been the op. I now swear by my 5k and now understand why some say the RX ups the 9K. Can’t hear em cant work em. 73 gud DX

Thanks for your comments. I remember playing with the IPO and am aware of its capabilities but to be honest don’t remember if I had it on 1 or 2. I remember propagation was really poor so I could’ve had it on 2 but if that were the case I surely needed it due to poor conditions. It that were the case I still wasn’t happy with it. I’ll go up and review it again just to be fair ,but I had operated the rig numerous times. Could’ve been a faulty rig. I too got bad audio reports when I was there.

BTW! As for the bad audio reports I was getting…..me being an audio file surely couldn’t have attributed it my operating technics. Unfortunately as good as the individual is that maintains the station at W1AW I’m not sure he sets the audio aspect of each rig accordingly to specific microphones their using. Radio does have an EQ and think that it’s not set properly over there. I’m gonna mention it next visit on getting that shit straightened out. I hate crapping sounding and hate operating one.

Man, when I talked to that op, it sounded all muffled like he was gobling up the mic or something at first. Actually after listening for a while it sounded like all the highs were cut out. I mean ALL of them. I’m using a Heil Proset with a HC-4, but I have a deep voice. I get complements worldwide via that FTdx-5000MP you’re not so sure of. Hope you dug the QSL.

Thanks for the QSL! I dug it and think its cooler than mine. LOL! Mines is on the way. The comment you made about the op you heard on the FT-5000 sounding like crap at W1AW is the same report I got when I was there. I think I’m going back this friday or next week and I’m going to try to fix that for sure. Try anyway! I know it’s how they have it set and thats right out the box. Again, Thats YEASU for you. LOL! Nah, I’m gonna play more with it and also do a review of another radio there. 73!
