This tuner minimizes the VSWR between the transmitter & the tuner- it does not reduce or change the VSWR in the feed line to the antenna, that is done by matching the feed line impedance at the antenna end of feed line. Many antennas have a matching network to couple the feed line to the antenna. A poor antenna & feed line is not improved with the tuner only power transfer is maximized – this works for receive and transmit – using impedance matching is always useful for maximum power transfer. Testing a coaxial cable HF magnetic loop antenna
Testing a lightweight HF magnetic loop antenna made from 7 metres of RG58 coaxial cable. Contacts were made on 40 and 20 metres during the Lighthouse Weekend. It uses just three main parts: the coax itself, an air-spaced variable capacitor (approx 50 – 100pF max) and a T50-43 ferrite toroid. The toroid is threaded over the coaxial cable. RF from the transceiver is fed via a 2 or 3 turn winding over the toroid (experiment with this for lowest SWR). The coax inner is left unconnected; only the braid is used here. The loop is for low power use only – it will take 10 – 20 watts before the variable capacitor arcs over. Performance is, as expected, somewhere between a smaller pedestrian mobile magnetic loop and a full sized wire antenna. It would be improved if the variable capacitor was a low loss type and the coaxial cable was soldered straight to it. While there’s enough information above to make your own, it’s worth checking out G4FON’s website ( www.g4fon.net ) for similar loops. My loop is closest to his Version 2.

WX4RNK-first-RADAR
The first activation of Blacksburg SKYWARN was about 1PM on 10 May 1995. This is a scan of a printout from the (relatively new) NEXRAD WSR-88D RADAR showing one of the first storms we tracked. There was only one display for the RADAR (the PUP) in the office. The NWS forecasters would print out hard copy of interesting storms for SKYWARN. In later years, there was a video monitor in the SKYWARN station that displayed the right side screen from the PUP. Today, everyone has access to the current RADAR data.
The color printing technology was a Tektronix "solid ink" thermal printer. In a nutshell, it would melt colored wax (kind of like a crayon) and deposit the ink on the page — very high quality for its day.

From my radio room in San Francisco, a little DXing with the SX-88. Starting with 9700khz-Radio Bulgaria out of Bulgaria, rapidly crossed over 9690khz-CRI out of Beijing..9680khz-Radio Taiwan out of Florida on relay, and land on 9660khz- Radio Australia, the 10000 watter out of Brandon, Australia. There is where I did a little comparo between old tech and new…my ear says old tech sounds much better..at least here in the room. The 1954 SX-88 vs. the 2008 Icom IC-R75. How about you?
