1206 SMT resistor compared to penny
Traditionally, hobbyists have used through-hole components. Virtually all commercial products now use surface mount components. Hobbyists are slowly being dragged over to surface mount parts. The 1206 resistor, to the right of the penny, is just .12 inches by .06 inches. It is one of the larger surface mount sizes. The NorCal Dummy Load uses 44 of these 2.2 kOhm resistors.

least at the beginning. This article describes the construction of asimple one-tube regenerative receiver that willfulfill the basic requirements for communicationswork. The title of the article states that thereceiver is a one-tube job. Actually, it uses twotubes in one envelope — envelope meaning theglass enclosure. The 6U8 is a triode-pentode, andin this receiver the pentode section is used as aregenerative detector and the triode portion asan audio amplifier. With this receiver it is possible to hear amateurand commercial stations in the 2- to 20-Mc.range. This tuning range will enable the builderto listen to the two low-frequency Novice bands. Also, if one is interested in obtaining codepractice, WlAW, the ARRL Hq. station, can betuned in for its nightly code-practice sessions. The Circuit The circuit used in this receiver differs in a fewplaces from the usual regenerative-receiver cir-cuit. For example, instead of the usual smallantenna-coupling capacitor or inductor, provision

was included here for either a series- or parallel-tuned antenna circuit. This allows a wide rangeof coupling adjustments to be obtained, as isoften necessary with regenerative receivers. Referring to Fig. 1, the antenna coil, Li,couples the signal to the detector tuned circuitL2C2C3. The capacitor, C2, is larger than C3 andis used as the handset capacitor — once Czis set for a particular frequency range, C3 is usedas the bandspread tuning control. To facilitateusing manufactured coils, the coil L2 is tappedto obtain a feed-back or tickler winding. Re-generation in the detector is controlled bychanging the screen voltage obtained at thepotentiometer Ri. An r.f. filter, using two cap-acitors and an r.f. choke, is placed in the platecircuit of the pentode detector to reduce r.f.appearing at the grid of the triode audio ampli-fier. Still further attenuation of r.f. at the gridis obtained through the use of a series resistorand a shunt capacitor right at the grid of theaudio stage. To s

Itis perhaps too broad a generalization to say that Arcticjourneys have usually been made under fine weatherconditions, but few, if any, Arctic travellers have beensubjected to the distressing frequency of blizzards andstrong winds that added so much to our discomfort inthe South. The geographical difference between the work of theNorthern and Southern sledge traveller is as great asthe climate, if not greater. … To the South, it willbe seen that everywhere the explorers ship is broughtup by solid land or by some mighty wall resembling thatof the Great Ice Barrier; to pass beyond his ship there-fore, the explorer must either travel over land or overgreat and ancient snow-fields which possess a similarsurface. But I wasstill more impressed by the obvious impossibility ofdragging a sledge over such a surface at the rate main-tained by the old English travellers on the Northernsea-ice. A general comparison of the sledging condi-tions met with in the North and in the South CEUinotbe said, therefore, to be in favour of the latter, and itmust be conceded that the Antarctic sledge travellerjourneys under considerable relative disadvantage; hehas to meet seve

Random Mac parts at the Hamfest in Baltimore this year. I wanted to liberate them all, and give them a new home.

A detail of the three-section fiberglass mast on the tripod supporting the antenna. View the large size to see the fiberglass mast sections and the antenna. The fiberglass masts fit over the tripod as if purpose made, then nest on each other. We have four fiberglass sections, but used only three here. We bought the sections at a military surplus store, where they are described as tent poles.
We could have splayed the legs of the tripod out further for greater stability, as the bike mechanic did.

PC SWAP for Antenna Analyzer
This Toshiba A15-S129 is available for swap. Details, if you are a ham radio person: I want to trade a Toshiba Satellite A15-S129 notebook computer for an antenna analyzer.
The Computer:
Celeron 2.4 GHz 400 MHz system bus clock speed
13 by 11.5 by 1.5 inches
6.3 pounds
40 GB hard disk
15-inch active-matrix display (1024×768 maximum resolution
DVD/CD-RW
two USB ports
integrated 56K modem
RJ-45 LAN network port
PCMCIA port (1)
The system fan buzzes when it starts up and after about 3-5 minutes quiets to normal and functions normally. There are about a dozen weird pixels where the screen has touched the touchpad over time all within a 1cm spot, and one 1-pixel-wide vertical line on the monitor. (Photographs show this.)
This would make an excellent PC for portable digital ops, and is a fine general-purpose second machine.

I am looking for an MFJ antenna analyzer, or one of another type if you wish to suggest one.
Thanks,
