Probably way more massive than it needs to be… but it gets the job done. This’ll let me hang a circular plastic connector panel-mounted right through the lightening hole and sticking out the base of the vertical stabilizer. There’ll also be a second hole for conduit. Both the wire run and the conduit will go up to the fairing, where I may someday install a camera or an HF antenna.

In the meantime, I don’t have to worry about how to run wires through the vertical stabilizier if I decide to mount something up there.

For more details about the construction of the vertical stabilizer, see the build log.

S129-E-007227 (21 Nov. 2009) — Astronaut Randy Bresnik (near the Columbus laboratory), STS-129 mission specialist, participates in the mission’s second session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, eight-minute spacewalk, Bresnik and astronaut Mike Foreman (out of frame), mission specialist, installed a Grappling Adaptor to On-Orbit Railing Assembly, or GATOR, on the Columbus laboratory. GATOR contains a ship-tracking antenna system and a HAM radio antenna. They relocated a floating potential measurement unit that gauges electric charges that build up on the station, deployed a Payload Attach System on the space-facing side of the Starboard 3 truss segment and installed a wireless video system that allows spacewalkers to transmit video to the station and relay it to Earth.

Thats right /AG…

To all of you non hams out there, that means that I have now successfully passed the FCC Element 3 Amateur Radio exam, thus making me a General Class license holder. The /AG is the way I have to identify when using my new privileges until the FCC receives and processes all of my paperwork.

Recently the FCC changed the licensing requirements for Amateur Radio eliminating all morse code requirements. I had already passed my Element 1 exam many years ago which covered a 5wpm morse code exam. However with the new change the code test (element 1) is no longer required. This has caused a renewed interest in Amateur Radio and has removed a barrier that was preventing many people from upgrading in the past. For me, it just kind of worked out as I already had the Element 1 exam behind me… But at any rate here is to being a General now…..

Paper

A QSL card is a record of a contact made between two amateur radio stations. This QSL card was sent by Chief Radioman R.S. Roberts to 140 stations that he heard and made contact with during the USS New York’s Coronation cruise from April 15th until May 30th 1937. He was using the call sign W3DTO.
The USS New York was carrying the Presdient’s official representative to the coronation Admiral Hugh Rodman. The ship also took part in the Grand Naval Review on the 20th May 1937 as part of the coronation festivities.

my Yaesu FT-5100 broke some time in 2000-2001, radio output dropped significantly on VHF.
Turns out this is commonplace, as the Toshiba S-AV24 PA module is aluminum-ceramic mounted to the radio heat sink body with two screws atop a heat sink compound. Too much heat/cooling breaks the ceramic due to stress cracks, and severs the traces inside the module. I had re-soldred mine as much as possible, but was not pleased with re-installing and chancing another failure. I found a new module online for less than shipped. Installed it, and things seem very happy once again, with one bulb burned out in the lower left corner.

I love this radio 🙂
