London, UK (PRWEB) September 1, 2005

A man from London, UK is currently training for an attempt next year at flying a hang glider across the UK from land’s End to John O’Groats.

Shola Ogunlokun a 41 year old married father of 3 who had never flown a hang glider before taking up this challenge said “I aim to fulfil a dream of flying, use the challenge as an opportunity to meet the people of Britain and encourage people of similar ethnic backgrounds as me to pursue their dreams”.

Shola is on stage 2 of a 3 stage training programme, and has flown a glider off a 2000ft mountain on completion of stage 1 of his training. He is currently looking for sponsors and in talks with a TV production about making a documentary of his attempt.

The flight attempt is currently planned for around Autumn next year, should take between 5-7 days, and Shola would like to spend the night of each flight at the home of a local in the town he lands. If successful, Shola will be the first person to have flown a hang glider across the UK over this distance.

This is a sample of the HF Interference that I am experiencing at home.

The data noise above 16MHz is caused by a neighbour’s BT Vision Powerline Adapter (Ethernet over Power Line), When this is removed, the data noise above 16MHz becomes silent.

The noise below 16MHz remains at all times, even when the Powerline Adapter is removed and the data noise is silent.

Please help me diagnose where this could be coming from! I have turned my entire house power off at the breaker and have run the radio from a 12v battery and the noise is the same. I have also tried a different radio with the same results.

As Albania moves towards EU membership, this report delves into their vicious tradition of blood feuds, a system of honour enshrined in blood that has claimed 10,000 lives since the fall of communism.

“Ten years ago my father killed a man in a fight at work”, says 18-year-old Ahmet. “Since then, I haven’t left the house because my life would be in danger.” Ahmet is one of 800 youth in Albania forced into a life of isolation after becoming the target of a violent reprisal in ‘Kanun’, the ancient honour system. Trapped in his grandparents’ house for his own safety he lives in constant fear. But as Albania is in the process of EU accession, many like mediator Pashk Lleshi hope truces can pave the way for the prevention of blood feuds.

SACRAMENTO, CA (PRWEB) September 8, 2005

The California ISP Association (CISPA), the largest state association of Internet service providers, today announced it will assist municipalities in California that wish to design and deploy wireless Internet service throughout their city.

CISPA, which has more than 100 members that are Internet service providers, is offering technical support, wireless network design support, procurement support, and relationships with local ISPs to help cities develop alternative and affordable broadband Internet service for their residents. CISPA said the need for other forms of communications and Internet service is especially important given the pending mergers of SBC and AT&T and Verizon and MCI, as well as the recent aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“Hurricane Katrina has made it apparent that traditional phone services are unable to survive or recover quickly from a natural disaster,” Said Mark Esser, vice president of Wireless Broadband for the California ISP Association. “During the first few hours after the hurricane, only amateur radio and one wireless ISP were able to supply emergency communications to New Orleans. Local and state governments understand more than ever before that they should not rely on a single communications company for primary telecommunications and Internet service.”

Hundreds of cities, large and small, are developing plans to wire their towns to provide ubiquitous and affordable high-speed Internet service. In response, legislatures in at least 20 states have proposed or passed legislation trying to block cities from creating wireless networks that compete against the former Bell phone companies and national cable companies. Most of the cable and phone companies have come out in support of state legislation restricting cities from creating affordable wireless Internet service.

Cities interested in further information about CISPA’s wireless assistance program can contact CISPA at ED@cispa.org or visit the CISPA wireless information system at http://cispa.thesupernet.com

About CISPA

The California ISP Association, Inc. (http://www.cispa.org) has more than 100 independent ISP members representing more than 3 million California consumers and businesses. Advocating for the interests of ISPs and their customers since 2000, CISPA provides a unified voice to address legislative, regulatory and consumer issues as well as to support innovation within the ISP industry.

Sometimes people ask me how to use aprs.fi with D-Star. This might not be exactly what they were asking for, but here is a video displaying the new beta version of aprs.fi running over D-Star on 1298.125 MHz (128 Kbit/s DD mode, Icom ID-1). Works like a charm!

Quite naturally I am using IP addresses from the amateur radio AMPRnet range (44.x.y.z) for the radio link. The web site is loaded over the 1.2 GHz radio link, both ends use Icom ID-1 radios which act as an Ethernet bridge. The laptop is directly connected to the ID-1 using the shown Ethernet plug (and wifi is disabled, of course).

This video was shot at the OH2K club station in Kauniainen (www.krk.fi), sound track courtesy of OH2GEK working HF a few feet to the right.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 27, 2011

Triad Semiconductor Inc. (“Triad”) the industry’s leading supplier of via-configurable mixed-signal ASICs and Kaben Wireless Silicon Inc. (“Kaben”) an industry leading provider of high performance mixed-signal IP, announced the development of a programmable and via-configurable RF array (RF-VCA) for use in a wide variety of wireless applications. Implemented in a 65 nm RF-CMOS process, the RF-VCA makes integrating ARM processors, a customer’s proprietary digital circuits and custom RF receivers into small, cost effective solutions a reality.

Traditionally, RF IC design has been expensive, time-consuming and risky! RF ICs often need from three to four expensive silicon fabrication cycles and they require two years to develop a production worthy device. Using the Triad-Kaben RF-VCA approach, designs can go from concept to working silicon in four to six months. As the RF-VCAs are configured with a single mask layer change, designs can be modified and revised silicon can be delivered in four weeks at a fraction of the cost of a full-custom RF IC re-spin. “Not everyone has cell-phone-like production volumes and the development budgets necessary to create their own custom 65nm RF receiver ASIC paired with an embedded ARM processor and custom analog and digital” said Reid Wender, VP of Marketing at Triad Semiconductor “Now, with the Kaben Powered RF-VCA, many companies that would have never considered ASIC integration can afford their own custom RF-VCA solution.”

The RF-VCA contains two complete RF receiver signal chains that can be configured for applications such as GPS, cellular base stations, cognitive radio, military receivers, FM tuners, ISM-band receivers, and MRI channels. Central to the RF-VCA’s architecture is Kaben’s patented SIF-ADC™ technology that implements RF down-mixing, SAW filter replacement, and analog to digital conversion (ADC) and can be dynamically programmed in the field. The SIF-ADC architecture is ideally suited for implementation on Triad’s VCA architecture. Implemented in an RF-optimized 65nm process, the RF-VCA combines high-performance RF and IF processing with 12-14 bit, 156MSPS SIF-ADCs, onboard RF synthesizers, 2-million configurable ASIC gates, 2-Mbits of dual-port SRAM, and dual 3.125Gbps SERDES channels. The RF-VCA is a complete RF and digital solution for applications spanning frequencies from DC to 3GHz. “Combining the performance and field programmable capabilities of the SIF-ADC with the configurability of the VCA technology is very powerful” said Seste Dell’Aera, Kaben’s Director of Marketing. “A single product can now be applied to a wide a range of wireless and wireline receiver applications.”

To review your RF application and how your business can benefit from an RF-VCA implementation, please contact Triad’s system architects at 336-774-2150 or info(at)triadsemi(dot)com to schedule a review of your requirements. For information on the SIF-ADC contact Kaben at 613-596-6646 or seste.dellaera(at)kabenwireless(dot)com.

Kaben SIF-ADC™ Technology

At the core of the receiver is Kaben’s patented SIF-ADC technology. The SIF-ADC is an analog implementation of a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter prior to a pipelined Analog to Digital Converter (ADC). Applying the filter function prior to the ADC provides exceptional anti-alias and image reject filtering to prevent unwanted signals from compromising the ADC performance. The transfer functions of the SIF filters are programmable using 256 field programmable tap coefficients.

This is a video showing off the setup of my G5RV Jr 40-10m HF antenna which I bought from W8AMZ. It is mounted around 6 or 7m in the air and each end is tied off to the fence. The antenna tunes up well with the autotuner in the Icom IC-746 on the 40, 20, 15, and 10m bands. It’s a great antenna, well made and rather inexpensive. I highly recommend it.

To clarify something in the video, I have not made any contacts on 80m so I’m not sure how well it works on that band, although it tunes up fine with an external antenna tuner.

Here’s your video introduction to ARRL General Class License Manual Lesson 5.1, Signal Review. The section is primarily review, but let’s spend a few minutes walking through the vocabulary so the concepts are firmly in mind before proceeding to the subsequent sections. This video covers continuous wave (with a brief excursion back to the spark era), carriers, modulation, modes, AM, and Single Side Band. Included is an actual on-the-air demo with a spectrum scope to look at an AM signal showing the carrier and both sidebands, and how each sideband contains all the information. A demonstration follows with just single sideband modulation. The video concludes with an introduction to angle modulation modes such as FM and phase modulation. The amateur bands are filling up with very dirty data modes transmissions, we are seeing single PSK and JT65 transmissions taking out the entire modes’ sub-bands in some instances and this is entirely avoidable, not to mention completely unacceptable.

This video is an addendum to my previous video regarding the setting up PowerSDR for data-modes (digi-modes) because there are some settings in Windows which can significantly contribute to IMD on TX.

We take a walk-through of VAC’s (Virtual Audio Cable) Windows driver back-end which defaults settings to 44.1kHz potentially adding unwanted sample rate conversions which can introduce further IMD, then look at how to have Windows reduce audio drive, cleaning up the outgoing AFSK.

The motto of the video is, ensure your ALC compression is zero and that the ALC is in negative figures of between -0.5 to -1.0 dB (legacy radios = NO ALC deflection at all) to guarantee minimum IMD resulting from audio drive levels. Depending on the mode, you may want to drive at even lower levels.
