Here is a view of the progress on the installation of my Rohn-25G 50′ tower. I acquired it from a friend of mine in trade for a case of beer and some gutter repair help, not that I did a lot. My father and I dug a rather narrow 6ft hole which we filled with 8″ of gravel, then set the first tower piece down on top of it and seated the legs in the stone. This allows for drainage so that any water entering the tower legs wont collect, freeze, and then split the pipes in the winter. Then we dumped in another 8 inches of gravel and backfilled the hole with dirt, stopping to compact it with some 2×4’s about every 12 inches. The tower ended up being rock solid, as in absolutely NO saw what so ever. It is as if we bolted it to the house already. I will upload more pics as we make progress and begin lifting up the other sections to complete it.

Just a quick update, I finally purchased the safety gear so I can get started working on mounting the house bracket, and once I acquire a Gin-pole can get to putting the last 3 sections up. Then comes the wiring and what not.

A friend installed his tower in dirt only (no concrete) and I helped him remove it about five years later. Here are some pics of the removal, the base was really rusted where it had been buried in dirt. I was surprised at the damage. Pics here: earl.cc/kcp_tower_removal.htm

After looking at sdold’s video he posted directly below this one, I would have to agree with you. Interestingly enough though, we are going to be moving in about 3 weeks and my tower is coming with. I plan on digging down abou 2 ft to cut off the bottom part and use it at the next house, so I will post a video/pics with the results of being burried for 2 years. Thanks everyone!

Sorry for the slow response. I said “put in 8 inches of gravel, set the tower down in there, put another 8 inches of gravel and then BACKFILLED (with dirt) and it is rock solid”. Thanks!
