JHL Supply and CampingSurvival.com are pleased to announce the debut of UrbanSurvivalStories.com, a Web site to provide information and real life urban survival experiences. The site contains firsthand accounts from people who have experienced urban survival situations and recommendations on how to be safe during emergency situations.

“When JHL Supply launched CampingSurvival.com, we focused initially on providing customers with the best wilderness survival gear,” said Tom Sciacca, President of JHL Supply. “But with the amazing devastation caused by natural disasters – as well as the civil unrest caused by domestic terrorists, riots and other urban emergencies – we realized that it would be very helpful for people to have a source for information and recommendations from the people who actually survived those incidents.”

CampingSurvival.com, launched in 2002 by JHL Supply, has earned a reputation as one of the leading online authorities on camping and survival gear, and has had consistent and rapid growth ever since. The growth was fueled by an increasing awareness of disaster preparedness due to the ever-present threat of terrorism, as well as a number of high profile natural disasters including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Wilma, the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin.

Although the CampingSurvival.com still maintains a huge selection of wilderness survival equipment, it has also became known as a leading expert on urban survival, with items like “go bags,” water purification, emergency kits and MRE (meals ready to eat). Now that customers recognize the importance of these survival supplies, Sciacca explained, they want a place to gather information about when to use them and which supplies are most useful for a given situation.

“With all the unrest – and in some cases anarchy – in countries around the world, I’ve had a number people inquire about the kind of emergency preparedness is needed in case of a terrorist attack or anarchist uprising,” Sciacca explained. “In some cases, this has happened in our own country, such as riots that have occurred in places like Los Angeles or the chaos that ensued after Hurricane Katrina.”

An excerpt from a survivor of the 1992 Los Angeles riots recalls the lawlessness of that period:

“When we arrived at the mall people were running out and we were attempting to run in. The mall had been evacuated by security guards to allow management to close the mall to protect the stores from looters. My wife was gone. She was ordered to leave her store with nowhere to go. We finally made contact when I conducted an emergency phone patch on my ham radio – she had received a ride with her girlfriend and was home traumatized by the event. By the time my brother and I got home the city was in the grips of a full blown riot and people were filling the streets and running by with stolen TV’s, stereos, and other merchandise.”

In another account, a Hurricane Katrina survivor gives a first hand account of what he did right and what he will change:

“During our six days at our home we didn’t have much appetite but did eat some. We learned that we needed to use food that didn’t attract bugs, both for our animals and for us, no canned cat food! We were careful with our water but had plenty even though we had three extra adults – having extra people is of course something that might very well occur in the event of a disaster. So hurricane season requires extra supplies on hand all season.”

Sciacca, a former Marine and veteran of the 1991 Gulf War, says he is continuing to accept submissions from others who have faced urban survival situations. For more information, visit the site at http://www.UrbanSurvivalStories.com.
