with your antenna on your roof you should be able to hit ALL repeaters up and down the front range.
i can hit all the denver area repeaters from way up here on just 5 watts! (base and mobile) get your antenna up on your roof and you will be very happy!

You need a dual band antenna one that will work on two frequencies COMET are my preference but I am in the Uk a good radio shop will point you in the right direction

Bought my V71 almost a year ago and I absolutely love it. I plan on buying a second one soon. This is an excellent radio using an older style look about it from years ago when radio’s were simpler to use. Although this model still uses menu’s, once you affiliate yourself with this radio’s operation it’s very easy to use. Excellent cross band repeat operation too, which I use every single day 🙂

@acetech82 you are not supose to use two different repeaters. one freq is simplex and the other is the repeater. lots of people learn that quick. did you figure it out?

@hamradiofreq yeah, i know one is simplex and the other is a repeater. problem I have is the Kenwood will go in to a lock mode and stop transmitting during heavy traffic on a repeater.

can you use this radio in the cross band mode to link a 70cm repeater and a 2m repeater together?
i know it’s cool to use in a simplex/repeater function but if needed could you link machines?

No, it is cross band repeat only. “In band” repeaters require large band pass and/or notch filters. Otherwise the transmitter will overload the receiver. Google “repeater duplexer” to see see how large they are for a 2m repeater and you will see why a small mobile radio cannot function as an in band repeater. However the cross band repeat function is really cool and can serve as a powerful tool in emergency communications.

i use my old tm733 for crossband good feature, its a good idea to engage time out timer(tot) so in heavy traffic it shuts off then re starts also you can activate remote use so using dtmf you have external control when out,i have to remove mike though as it will pick up noise in room and ends up sounding terrible

Thanks for the info. Good video demonstration. I’m looking to purchase my first mobile 2m/70cm radio to use as a base station for my newly purchased Arrow Antenna Dual Band JPole. I was looking at this radio and the Yaesu 7900m/8800R. Can’t make up my mind. eham.com rates these radios very good. Any advice on my selections?

cigarjohn, i have both radios. i would rather have two kenwoods.
i have the 8900r in my vehicle. the 6 meter and 10 meter are useless as who uses 6 meter or 10 meter fm. noboby! get the kenwood or get two. i keep it in the shack.
actually i purchased the “RC-D710” head for only 99 bucks and now it is a kenwood d710. get the kenwood. please you will thank me for many years, get the kenwood.
