Comparing S Meter readings to judge a receiver is soooo CB. ANY ham who has been around radios at all knows S meter readings differ from model to model.

    Hi, Thanks for the comment.

    What’s wrong with CB 🙂 ..

well, look I had to give you some reference point. Of course I could hook up my 40K test set and show you the input signal in precise numerical values, would that be better for the average ham…

You dont really believe the PROIII has a 6-9 db better receiver do you? ARRL lab test show them really close in that regard. If you watch your 746pro and the way the meter acts you will see that when it hits S9 its like it hits a wall. Thats because (and you can demonstrate this with the rf gain) signals beyond S9 on the 746 Pro go in 2 bar increments for some reason. A buddy of mine has one and i noticed this on his. It will hit S9 hard and anything after that must be significantly stronger.

I have an ICOM 756 PROII & ICOM 746 PRO & the rigs hear just about the same but the meter on the 746 PRO is VERY “STINGY” even though it hears EVERYTHING the 756 PROII hears the S-meter reading is ALWAYS “LESS”on the 746 PRO if the signals are above S-9!

well there is a lot of garbage on CB, at least there was at one time here in the states, that’s pretty much what is wrong with it. It was or is still a mess, in some areas. I agree with the reference point, yes that is needed, but the other guy is right, they do differ from radio to radio, and only with some serious lab test gear could one get it to be all most 100% accurate.

Cioa! Personally I prefer the 756 III -Pro than the 746 pro for HF. I find it much smoother. Thank you for the comment…73’

The 756 Pro3 has a sick receiver, however DSP implementation is not the best. The rig often sounds muffled and veiled on CW. Very fatiguing to listen to compared to older, analog type rigs. I’ve heard many others with the same complaints!

True Id agree with that, but I think the garbage that you would find on 20, is on maybe 2 % of the band, where CB, its most of it. Now the crap you find on 75, as far as the amount is greater, per frequency then 20m, wouldn’t you think?
