I personally recommend you hose clamp the antenna at the bottom end on the
end cap get the antenna above the the main mast as you are shielding the
antenna into one direction. Also you soldered the coax is not the best you
would of been better off soldering connectors on as there are losses not
doing it this way. But nice ideal

Sorry for not getting back to you – sometimes life just gets crazy busy…
It picks up “pretty well.” I can hear stations 20 to 30 miles away with it.
It’s not the best solution, but a workable one if the parts are at hand.
It’s pretty low profile too and if painted to match the house or trees
    could blend in well.

Thanks for taking a look and commenting. A discone will certainly work
better – I’ve thought about putting one up too.

Not sure what the actual gain is but it performs a little better than a
hand held antenna. A jpole or other similar antenna will certainly work
better but this might be a good antenna to kind of hide if necessary.
    Thanks for taking a look.

Well done. Not knocking your project but have to comment for those out
there looking for more than a “little” improvement in reception, one of the
commercial scanner antenna options work very well. It won’t be as cheap of
course but I spent around $35 on a discone antenna and noticed a
substantial improvement. But, if money is tight, nothing wrong with the DIY
route and it will be an improvement over an antenna that is indoors. Thanks
for posting the vid. Again, well done! 🙂

Hello, thanks for the video. I know this is an old video so, two years
later, did you ever have guests who didn’t know or forgot how close the
mount was to the chimney and built a nice, warm, raging fire. Hope all is
    well.

being so close to the flue cap it might crack the pvc quicker than normal
or build up pressure and cause a cap to fail. please let us know what
happens later , its still a cool idea.
