Amateur Radio Ladder Tower (ARLT) V.1. Ham Radio Outlet www.hamradio.com X50A Dualband Base/Repeater Antenna www.rfparts.com Special Features: • Fiberglass radome • Stainless steel hardware • Wide band performance • Factory adjusted — no tuning required • High wind rating • DC grounded Specifications: Band: 2m/70cm Gain (dB): 4.5/7.2 Max Power Rating: 200 Wind Rating: 135 MPH (no ice) Height (feet): 5.6 Connector: UHF Element Phasing: 3-1/4l, 3-5/8l
It should be noted that the tower is so balanced that initially I have to assist it by pulling at the bottom of it to start in going over. Additionally, there is so little weight against the cables that I have to be sure to keep the cable tracking in the pulleys until there is sufficient weight to keep them in the tracks. When I raise it the wench assumes greater torque at a point where the ratcheting mechanism finally begins to engage so that I have to adjust the ratchet trigger to the proper setting. The whole process is weightless and easy to do for the user.

I dug holes 28″ deep through soil and clay, then positioned concrete cylinders. Sequentially I then tapped each 3 foot long 3/4″-10 threaded dowel into the bottom of the hole surface in relation to each corresponding hole on the hinge plate. Once all threaded dowels were established, I poured quickcrete into each cylinder to the brim. I joined all four of the inner exposed concrete forms by digging a pit in the center and filling it too with concrete. After the concrete solidified, I mounted the hinge plate on the foundation. I actually screwed on some 3/4″ nuts n each threaded dowel so that I could manually adjust the height of each corner should there be any mistake (inevitably there was). I placed the bottom tower section on the hinge plate and secured it with provided screws on the hinge brackets.
How to build a hinged Rohn tower, or any tower for that matter. Hopefully this will give some ideas to those that need it.

Installing the 100′ Rohn SSV ham radio Tower. There are 5 twenty foot sections. We mounted three in singles, then put the top two in at once, because the boom truck wasn’t tall enough to put the top 20′ on top of an 80′ base. Sorry there’s not more video, but there were only three of use working – N9VW on the ground ropes and video, KC7RAS on the boom truck and tower, and me (K7GLM) bolting tower sections together. Steve could only shoot video during the slow times! The SSV tower is normally a commercial tower, but I’m using it for amateur radio and emergency communications.

Here is a view of the progress on the installation of my Rohn-25G 50′ tower. I acquired it from a friend of mine in trade for a case of beer and some gutter repair help, not that I did a lot. My father and I dug a rather narrow 6ft hole which we filled with 8″ of gravel, then set the first tower piece down on top of it and seated the legs in the stone. This allows for drainage so that any water entering the tower legs wont collect, freeze, and then split the pipes in the winter. Then we dumped in another 8 inches of gravel and backfilled the hole with dirt, stopping to compact it with some 2×4’s about every 12 inches. The tower ended up being rock solid, as in absolutely NO saw what so ever. It is as if we bolted it to the house already. I will upload more pics as we make progress and begin lifting up the other sections to complete it.

Installing a 30 foot Rohn 25G tower at the qth of 9Y4NG-Arnold …. Installation is done without a gin pole , as the 10ft section is light ( pse think twice before installing this way ) …….. Cecil – 9Z4CLN is in the orange coverall , and Arnold – 9Y4NG is the videographer . After receiving emails from guys who are not into installing towers, I must say — YES that I do have 2 Gin Poles , I have been installing towers for yearssssss. I have the physical strength and a lot of learnt techniques for doing an installation this way …… ROHN 25G sections are very light for me to manage this way by myself ……… I have installed a 50ft and a 40ft tower with this method.. If you must try this , practice on the ground with a 10ft section to get used to the sections weight .

To reiterate: A shortened verison of the Rotor;using the index or middle finger for the Y3K is merely preference. I’m gonna try taking a shot at the real deal later on. Once again props to BaliBowler for the Rotor (and inadvertent inspiration for the Y3K).

Here I modified an old Radio Shack ground-plane VHF/UHF scanner antenna for better reception on GMRS UHF frequencies (467.xxxmhz) as well as monitoring my counties local fire department which is 151.385mhz. I used standard welding-rod which solders very easily. I made all the radials as well as the verticals elements slightly longer than the original. Sealed the antenna with standard hot glue, to help keep out moisture. Thanks for watching!

Testing my ham radio tower and new winch before installing any antenna. I hired a welder to build the tower stand for me. I poured the concrete and installed it then added an electric winch. The tower (Rohn 25G) is five sections and is about 48′ tall without the rotor, mast and antennas.
