Long Beach’s Wilson High School Amateur Radio Emergency Club
Important things are happening at Wilson High School’s Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Club. We live in an earthquake zone where emergency response procedures should be practiced regularly and I am happy to report the Wilson AREC Club members have stepped up to the plate. The club meets every Wednesday from 3 pm to 4 pm in the room of their vigilant leader and mentor, Devon Day. The first ten minutes of the meeting made me realize that these young adults are learning a language that few people understand. Each week other amateur radio groups and individual ham operators listen for the sign-in of the Wilson AREC Team. We waited by the radio as the operators in Roseville, CA called for each member to identify themselves with their unique call letters. Roseville is over 400 miles to the north, above Sacramento but the connection was quite understandable. We also heard from the ham operators aboard the Queen Mary who came through extremely loud and clear. Watch the video for club member Kevin Keo’s clever explanation on the reason for the extra clarity. Brandon Silvi is the advanced engineer in the group who is in charge of teaching the other students how to solder. Brandon and the other students wear their blistered mistakenly soldered fingers as a badge of honor. Jimmy Draper spoke about spending time at Union Station with the Amtrack operators. These kids are getting around! Max Chang, an interesting young man who plans on attending medical school and currently …

ARRL’s New Video, The DIY Magic of Amateur Radio
ARRL’s new video, “The DIY Magic of Amateur Radio,” is an 8-minute video that follows some of the innovative, imaginative and fun ways “hams” use radio technology in new and creative ways.
The presentation is directed toward the DIY (do it yourself) movement, which is inspiring a new generation of creators, hackers and innovators.
The message should be helpful for existing members to shape the ways they understand and talk about ham radio.

Morse Code Straight Key J-38
This J-38, manufactured by LIONEL TRAIN Co during the common factory "repurposing" of WW2. It was in very, very sorry looking condition before restoration but all the parts were there, most importantly. Restored using dental lab equipment at work. Iron & Brass ultrasonically cleaned and high polished. Iron pits rubber-wheeled first. Metal Center Hub sand blasted and painted semi-gloss black. All metal/brass varnished with q-tip applicator. Bakelite was water and compound ragwheel polished on denture polishing machine Under key: Two-decade-old 13th editon of the Radio Amateur’s World Atlas. WW2 pilots used an upper leg clip on version to send morse code while flying. And you have trouble driving with your cell phone.
Minolta D500 flash and incandescent available light mix @ 1/20sec.

Tactile Morse Code
Tactile Morse Code
Tactile Morse Code (T-Morse) is formed by repositioning the dots and reorienting the dashes of the Morse code. The reconfigured letters of T-Morse have a tight, compact aspect that can be read like Braille.
T-Morse is a dynamic new approach to blind readership. Significant innovation in coding for letters, numbers, punctuation and symbols form the basis of this simple, easy-to-learn code that may offer a compelling alternative to Braille.
Learning T-Morse is a breeze. Morse

NO-RAD-ZONE com – BACKSCATTER VANS – Joseph Reiss VP Marketing American Science & Engineering
(NO-RAD-ZONE) Joseph Reiss VP Marketing American Science and Engineering describes the newest technology. Backscatter technology can be applied anywhere and is being sold to the government as well as to the public. There is no regulation and no way of regulating how long they scan individuals. Radiation is dangerous. Radiation causes cancer. This can be a weapon and is definitely a violation of civil rights. It has no medical use and is too dangerous. Backscatter vans can pull up outside any home or building and monitor what is going on inside. They may witness anything they like for hours if not longer. Individuals are submitted radiation without any knowledge. If a family unit is present children are subjected as well, unbeknownst to anyone. No amount of radiation is safe. Children and the elderly are more susceptible to DNA damage from radiation. If you had the money you could fry someone without them knowing it. 1/2 hour of backscatter/x-ray surveillance would cause cancer. AS & E specs show ratings for a 5 rem flash saying it’s relatively harmless. There is no information or specs on surveillance type radiation readings. Unpaid scientists disagree with the use of such products.

GB3VT Repeater on VHF, FM Using an Icom IC2725 Dual Band FM Transceiver.
Just RXing to GB3VT VHF Repeater, The following is took from “QRZ.COM” GB3VT, RV58, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. GB3VT is a 2 metre repeater located at 273 metres, 887 feet above sea level, QRA Locator IO83WA, in the City of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. The GB3VT repeater first became operational from its original site in December 1980 and has now been operational from its present site since 1995 and is co-sited with two other repeaters: GB3ST on 70cm and GB3SE on 23cm. GB3VT transmits on 145.725 MHz and receives on 145.125 MHz. Both the receiver and transmitter use full decode and encode Continuous Tone Carrier Squelch System at a frequency of 103.5 Hz. The Transmitter, Receiver and Repeater Control Logic are all-purpose designed and homebuilt, the timeout is currently set at 3 Minutes. The repeater also makes use of a home built 8 Cavity Duplexer, and the repeater delivers a total of 25 watts effective radiated power from a single colinear type of aerial. To fully access the repeater it has always been a requirement of the station wishing to access, to transmit 3 to 4 seconds of good audio of at least plus and minus 1 kHz deviation. Stations using less than the required minimum deviation will fail to access. In line with the now adopted United Kingdom 2 metre 12.5 kHz channel spacing, the repeater receiver has 12.5 kHz Intermediate Frequency Crystal Filters fitted and the transmitter peak deviation has also been reduced accordingly. To make the most …

Yaesu FT-817 Solar Powered Go-Pack – Part 2
This a review of a Yaesu FT-817 Solar Powered Go Pack. I built this solar powered case for my FT-817 radio so it can be used portable without the worry of power and keeping it self contained. It’s all contained in the case so it can easily be taken to a picnic, on holiday or attached to the backpack for a QRP adventure. Total cost for all the bits excluding the radio is about 0-0 (most bought off Amazon).

Motorola Minitor WX SKYWARN Weather alert pager EAS NOAA NWS
I’m a Skywarn spotter, Retired Firefighter, and radio nut, I programmed these VHF converted Fire Department & 160mhz pagers to do weather alerting. Unlike the SAME, but similar. You will get ALL Alerts that the NWS/NOAA puts out. They are all Computer programmed & can accept 2 Freqs opposed to others which only do 1, without monitor. I add monitoring in so the squelch does not need pressed to hear the alert like the old ones. I do the Free minitor programming, low cost alert systems, and alike. Certain things should simply be free. I’ve been screwed by radio shops before, which is why I do this cheaply it’s not right people profit from simple things like programming pagers.
