My Grumman C-1A Cockpit

In the 1990s I acquired the cockpit section of a former US Navy Grumman C-1A Trader, BuNo 136780. It sat in my backyard for almost a decade, but I never carried out my plans to turn it into my amateur radio station.

In 2004, I learned that the Quonset Air Museum in Rhode Island needed many of the parts on my cockpit to restore their historic C-1A, BuNo 136792. That aircraft was the aerodynamic prototype for the WF-2 (E-1B) Tracer airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft program. I decided to donate my cockpit to the Quonset Air Museum.

I have hundreds of these, and sadly, never got around to using them except on the occasional, um, occasion that I use it as a calling card or something. Japanese hams are notorious, according to K7AGE in his YouTube talk-up about QSLing, for QSLing fastidiously. Talk about rainy day projects…

This is a QSL card–for my non-radio-geek friends. They are sent out after a radio or personal contact to confirm that contact in writing. And to prove the contact was made for contesting purposes. This ‘orange tigi’ is taken from the Peace Corps compound in Bamako, Mali in December of 1995. This young lady was selling oranges–which, despite their name, were quite green.

Remote access – six ways to implement

Remote Access Your Ham Shack – Six Ways To Implement

A lot of amateur radio operators want to be able to remote control or remote access their ham radio equipment when they travel, when they go to the office or when they just go to another room in the house to actually spend quality, albeit multitask, time with their family.

I personally have been using Teamviewer for some time and it works great with my iPad for making JT 65 contacts wherever in the world that I have a Wi-Fi connection.

I’ve also been able to remote control Ham Radio Deluxe using my iPad, or my iPhone, to tune around and listen to sideband on HF or FM on VHF. (I’ve not yet tried to have a voice contact via the iPad – although this article is incentivizing me to finally make that last test that I never got around to.)

My approaches have been working well enough for me so far – but there are lots of other approaches as described in this excellent Acrobat document prepared by Mark, K6UFO, and Brian, N9ADG.

Remote access – six ways to implement

Just click the above photo and it will take you to the Acrobat file for immediate viewing.

I personally plan on trying RemoteHams.com when I have time to get around to it.

Regardless of what I’m using, I’m betting that you will find an idea in their slideshow that will work for you to remote access your shack.

Robert

Snow This Week?
Storm Team 8 is tracking the possibility of snow later this week. This graphic from the National Weather Service is similar to the Saturday PM GFS model output (current output here), which shows a swatch of heavy snow across N. Lower MI in the Weds.-Thurs.

PC SWAP for Antenna Analyzer

This Toshiba A15-S129 is available for swap. Details, if you are a ham radio person: I want to trade a Toshiba Satellite A15-S129 notebook computer for an antenna analyzer.

The Computer:
Celeron 2.4 GHz 400 MHz system bus clock speed
13 by 11.5 by 1.5 inches
6.3 pounds
40 GB hard disk
15-inch active-matrix display (1024×768 maximum resolution
DVD/CD-RW
two USB ports
integrated 56K modem
RJ-45 LAN network port
PCMCIA port (1)

The system fan buzzes when it starts up and after about 3-5 minutes quiets to normal and functions normally. There are about a dozen weird pixels where the screen has touched the touchpad over time all within a 1cm spot, and one 1-pixel-wide vertical line on the monitor. (Photographs show this.)
This would make an excellent PC for portable digital ops, and is a fine general-purpose second machine.
Photos:
I am looking for an MFJ antenna analyzer, or one of another type if you wish to suggest one.
Thanks,
KC7FYS

More grounding changes

With the arrival of my LMR400 N connectors, I was able to replace the existing cable segment between the house and the tower. The polyphaser that was located at the tower will be moved back to the house, so they’re all mounted together on a common bar.

Contesters and DXers are always looking for that competitive edge to magically pull out the weak signal that is either the rare country or multiplier they need to climb up the list. Larger antennas, higher gain pre-amps and other devices in line are great. However, what happens inside the radio with all those signals coming down your feedline can defeat all your efforts.

With the design of the IC-7851, Icom’s en
