The Tecsun 606 is clearly much better on the FM band than the Grundig G6. The 606 plays much louder and cleaner as well. The 606 will also drive headphones m…

This is good… but I wish you had added the AM band as well.
Go to my channel and look at the latest video. It has some AM demonstration.
between the 606 and the 380 which is newer? Anyone have an opinion on which is better? I found a retailer online that has both for basically the same money. Would like for hike/camp/emergency use……
The 606 is a newer model. Have not used the 380 so I comment based on research. The 380 has ETM tuning like 606. The 380 does have a smaller ferrite bar than the 606 so less AM sensitivity. But bigger WIP antenna on 380 for SW & FM. One big advantage of the 380 over the 606 is the keypad entry. I think the 380 has a beeper alarm and not just radio alarm. If SW bands were a priority I would go with the 380. If you only care about AM & FM then go with 606. 606 is a little smaller than the 380.
I appreciate in insight but based on my needs if you could only choose one on the overall collective merits which one would you recommend? general all band utility, I know I’m asking a lot here but you and a lot of others really seem to be dialed in on these units and admittingly this is not my area of expertise so I’m looking for all the info I can. thx!
If I could only have one radio and had to choose between the Tecsun 606 and the 380 I would pick the 380. The better SW reception, keypad, and beeper alarm would be the difference for me. And though the 380 has a little weaker AM sensitivity an external loop antenna would put AM perfomance higher due to less soft muting of weak signals vs. the 606. As much as I love the Tecsun DSP radios if I had more to pick from I would get one with SSB like the Tecsun 660. SSB allows you to listen to HAMs.
And one more thing. My favorite Tecsun DSP radio is the 390. The 380 is a smaller single speaker version of the 390. Being bigger the 390 has a larger AM ferrite antenna and a longer WIP antenna and thus better sensitivity on all bands without an external antenna. The extra speaker allows it to play a little louder. And the audio “Line-in” allows me to play my MP3 or iPod player though it so I can download and hear talk shows I missed. That said the 380 is still a great radio.
So the 380 cant pick up HAM radio, which in a disaster/SHF situation you probably would want to be able to pick up, right? Or do you think SW is the better trade off? It sounds like the 606 is am/fm/sw & HAM… sorry to be such a pest.
No Ham or Single Side Band (SSB) on the 606, 310, 390, or 380. The Tecsun 660 does have Ham or SSB. The 660 is a conventional radio where as the others mentioned above are DSP (Digital Signal Processing) using the Si4734 DSP chip from Silicon Labs. This chip has no SSB. This chip is superb but drawback is no SSB. But keep in mind AM is still useful for emergencies. Having SSB is just more complete. Your not a pest I understand and glad to help.
To directly answer your question. The Single Side Band (SSB) feature is how we listen to HAMs. If your radio has SSB it will always have SW. But not all SW radios have SSB. And yes for a “disaster/SHF” situation I would want SSB. The reason is because amature radio operators (HAMs) become very important in disasters. Do a YouTube search on “Amateur Radio Today Walter Cronkite”.
Could not tune in 11765 kHz tonight but did get strong stations on 11760 and 11775. If the bandwidth is set to wide then 11760 can be hear on the 11765 frequency. I am in the process of uploading a video for you. You can check my channel tomorrow night or the day after to see the video. Will probably not get a chance to tune this during the day.
Listening to 9860 kHz right now. Usually listen to Trunews at 1:00 UTC or 8:00 PM CST. I some times listen to 4840 kHz at 2:00 UTC which stays on for many hours after. Would be curious to know if you could tune those in Brazil. By the way my video response to your last questions is now posted on my channel.
SOUNDS like the Eton has a major lack of Sensitivity and filtering , doesn’t sound that great when put along side the Tecsun
I live in a area that prone to overload FM reception from WVHT-FM Hot 100.5 in Norfolk, Virginia and most of my radios have to be high end and sensitive and selective because of the overloading FM stations from Norfolk, VA. . I have get me one of these radios. Thanks for the demo.
Especially on FM. Both my Tecsun 606 and 390 far exceed my Eton/Grundig radios in FM sensitivity. However on AM and especially SW things even out or are in favor of Eton. But the multiple band widths on AM and SW definately improve selectivity on the Tecsuns. If only they would make a DSP Tecsun with SSB. I am a huge fan of the Tecsun 390 with the longer wip antenna. The speaker sound is not Tivoli beautiful but very clear and easy to listen to allowing you to just focus on content vs. sound.
Your welcome A Ebel
I think the Tecusn PL-390 the best portable I have on FM. The PL-380 and 606 are even smaller and good on FM to. Also like the audio line in on the 390 so you can play podcasts from your ipod or MP3 player through the speakers.
