I am almost in the same boat. I haven’t taken my exams yet. I can pass
general practice tests 9 out of 10 times and the extra 4 out of 10 times. I
have to find a new place to move to. So Im holding off on taking the test
until after I move. I would love to have a nice all band or just hf rig.
Totally into the qrp thing. I dream of going out into one of the state
forests and hooking up a random wire antenna to a low power rig like a
elecraft kx3 or a yaesu fd for my first contact. But the reality is that I
will probably have to settle on a using a Beofang to make my first cq via
repeater. Yeah I could go get a rebel. But I’m not confident in my cw above
10 wpm and I still have to learn the abriviated language they tap out. I’d
hate to mess up my first cq. Someday I hope we will probably meet on a
band. It’ll probably be hf since im in Michigan.

Nice. I just passed my test for technician on Saturday – 2/8/14 and am
waiting for my call sign. I have Baofeng too. I just figured out the
software to program it and added about 70 channels. A lot of local
repeaters and the local police, etc. I’ll have to video record my first
    contact too. Good luck!

You do not start with your name. YOU MUST START with your call sign PERIOD.
then id every 10 minutes. And he is not using standard phonetics. That can
confuse some people in other countries.

On licences for CB /11 meter band , You used to need one , But the dropped
it , And look at the mess on 11 meters now !! The same thing is happening
on the Amateur bands, Their making it so easy to get a licence that most
the CBers are on the Ham bands cutting up the same way as they did on 11
    meters !!!

@pitcalco Hi, no, I flit between Norway and the Czech Republic with the
missus. I’d love to have a ham radio though, we had a CB handheld years go
when I was a young guy, I remember talking to people only about 100km away
and it was way cool talking to far away people, I’d like to get back into
it. It was the same feeling in the 90s when I got into chat rooms, they
used to be fun until it sank into Nigerians selling cocoa, 22/f/single
nonsense and redneck Yank Obama haters, I guess ham is it!
