Guess you must learn Spanish before judge if those stations are
pirates….1) No ones of two stations operators say “faculo” (by the way
“faculo” is Italian not Spanish), 2) both stations are from south America
are one probably from Colombia (by accent), other from Dominican Republic
(Caribean) 3) Ham Operator from Colombia say to the other operator: “I’m
here calling and calling and no one read me, looks that they don’t want to
talk with south America (your translation is totally wrong!)

Si

@richfilmswales He was using a frequency designated to contact them on. In
an emergency, they would not be using that radio. 🙂

@IC2720 people have forgotten the translation of CQ aparantly. Money cant
buy skills, but state of the art tranceivers & antennas to reach a space
station 🙂 no offense, i am just a cynic old radioman.

Nevertheless, to contact the ISS crew you must use the crew contact
frequencies which are V/V, not V/U. And call in the traditional way you
would use to call an station. ISS voice callsign is NA1SS. But crew !=
    repeater. 🙂 73 de LU7DFV

@OK2BCK ..yes, the MIRs descent into athmosphere was a sad happening to
me.. also, they seemed to have a morse key on board. (back then i did not
do anything else but CW, so it must have been on CW) VHF/UHF has nothing to
do mit skills, but very much to do with money (beam, rotors, computers, and
decent power – all comercially available) vs shortwave -> home made
antennas, home made key, filters .. sure some commercial parts, but it had
much more of “experiment” sticking to it..73 fm OH

Looks like somebody’s a Kenwood fan 🙂 Actually I used to have all these
radio’s myself so I can’t say anything about it. I loved my TS-2000 and
TM-D700 (and a TH-D7 as well). Sky Command was a blast using all this stuff
    together.

@richfilmswales Actually, the crew usually has rec time scheduled for their
HAM station. The commander will oftentimes start calling out for any
stations on the ground and engage them in brief QSOs. I’ve heard the
station a few time, but I don’t have a good enough antenna for transmission
    to them yet.

And what can they do? This is WAY out of US jurisdiction. It’s up to the
nation states in the Americas themselves to regulate their airwaves. The
ISS relies on volunteer frequencies. There is no treaty that grants them
145.800Mhz, it’s up to nations to allow them to use it. If 145.800Mhz isn’t
registered in a country to the ISS then it’s legal for anyone else to use
    that frequency.
