I have a base station and my antenna is grounded and about 15 or so feet of the ground and my SWR reading on channel 20 is a little over 3! I heard that I should not talk on it for more that 3-5 seconds at a time, or not at all. How much danger of messing up my CB am I in? Can I talk on it for within the time limit or don’t talk all together?

@pyrofful – an SWR of around 2.5/3, that won’t tune down, does indicate an issue, so best to limit transmitting for too long until it’s fixed. Could be a number of reasons – coax cable troubles, antenna fault or maybe the antenna is too close to another object. Best try an online radio forum to get some better answers – like the Charlie Tango DX Group (just Google “Charlie Tango DX”).

@pyrofful What? The coax cable I got from a CB shop brand new. Used antenna. Oh and what is weird is that I can only get 3 or so miles on it. I hope it is just because of the bad SWR. At the peak of our house. Thanks I’m going to join. Thanks for the info! I hope it is just the SWR. Other wise I’m S.O.L.

@UKCBTV I hope! The sure ask a lot of locational questions before letting you get a response. It is always free to ask questions with them right? With the antenna I just think it is crap. The best SWR reading was 1.6 on channel 1 and 2.6 on channel 40. What is weird is that to adjust the antenna you have to move these two set screws at the base of the antenna. And they both have to be moved together.

@pyrofful – all free on the CT Site. Sometimes antennas can get some damp or water inside that can mess up the tuning – could well be that.

@UKCBTV Thanks again for telling me to ask him. I am going to try to use 3-4 Ground Plane wires. But I still think it is time to up grade to a A99. Just thought I’d give you a update, and a big thanks.

Good advice, another tip is to spread the Coax around had 1.5 – 1.7 down to 1.2 .1.3 after doing this.
