You can talk about just about anything over ham radio. Unlike CB, though, you need a license.

Obtaining a Technician-level license isn’t hard. You just need to study basic ham radio skills and regulations, and take a test on them.

You can get you license at any age. I got mine at 13.

There is plenty of info and resources out there for anyone with interest in ham radio. I encourage you to get your license and try it out.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message.

I live in a subdivde so I don’t think they would be happy if I put in a 200 foot Cellphone tower in my back yard with all of these beams in the sky.

You can get a license at 16. I got my technician when I was 12. If you mean can you do plain voice transmissions, yes you can. What you talk about depends a lot on what kind of radio your interested in. If you are QRPing, a lot of it is simply how your transmission is coming through.

Ah but you can work through the internet using IRLP – I was hesistant to restudy for a license after 35 yrs since my novice license expired until I saw the thing Randy and other hams are doing, and found you can use Echolink and not even own a radio – and the fact that there’s no more CW test since Feb 07. Taking my test Nov 14th, hope to be able to pass and get Extra but Tech would be great too.

Subdivisions are little communist dictatorships many times, other people live telling you what you can and cant do with your own property, Glad I’m in the boonies – no zoning and no one dictating what I do unless it’s unhealthy or illegal.

The name hamshack sounds like something one of those sleazy people would take their dates to. It still looks cool though. I wish I could have even half the stuff you have,

So I’m thinking of starting ham radio. I’m 15 years old. How much money do you think I should spend to at least get a basic system to operate ham radio? Thanks. -Scott

@phoshizzo Probably a couple of hundred for a new handheld 2 meter radio. More for HF. Google Teen Radio Journey to listen to Paul’s podcasts about getting licensed and going on hamradio. Randy

Fantastic setup, very nice layout. I’m guessing that you don’t run an amplifier? I have similar equipment in terms of the audio connections and XLR inputs and outputs coming in and out of my Behringer gear and even with 1kw PEP of output power I have yet to have any RFI issues. The key is very high quality and very high braid % balanced XLR audio cables. 73 -VA3AWP
