This video shows my JT65-HF QSO I had to Hawaii with KH6SAT. I used a FT817 running 2.5 watts into a long wire antenna on 40 meters (7.076MHz). I turned down the power output to about 2 watts to remove any ALC marks on the FT817. This is the most distance I have covered with 2.5 watts. Washington state and Hawaii are about 2905 miles apart. 73, N7JFP

I love all those "OMG I TOTALY TOOK A PITCURE OF A GHOSTSSS!!!11" images. Flash backscatter, breath condensation, camera straps, stray hairs, fingers in front of the lens… well here’s a real ghost for you. BOO! 🙂
This "ghost" is taking a stroll down the College Run trail at Chippokes Plantation State Park in Surry, VA. The washed out area on his mouth was supposed to be his tongue sticking out, but I guess I pointed the flashlight too directly at the camera and it flared out. Oh well.
If you look at the background, you’ll notice the glow of headlights coming up around the hill. I’m surprised I didn’t have a ranger coming out there to ask me just what precisely the h3ll I thought I was doing. 😀

Important things are happening at Wilson High School’s Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Club. We live in an earthquake zone where emergency response procedures should be practiced regularly and I am happy to report the Wilson AREC Club members have stepped up to the plate. The club meets every Wednesday from 3 pm to 4 pm in the room of their vigilant leader and mentor, Devon Day. The first ten minutes of the meeting made me realize that these young adults are learning a language that few people understand. Each week other amateur radio groups and individual ham operators listen for the sign-in of the Wilson AREC Team. We waited by the radio as the operators in Roseville, CA called for each member to identify themselves with their unique call letters. Roseville is over 400 miles to the north, above Sacramento but the connection was quite understandable. We also heard from the ham operators aboard the Queen Mary who came through extremely loud and clear. Watch the video for club member Kevin Keo’s clever explanation on the reason for the extra clarity. Brandon Silvi is the advanced engineer in the group who is in charge of teaching the other students how to solder. ARRL’s new video, “The DIY Magic of Amateur Radio,” is an 8-minute video that follows some of the innovative, imaginative and fun ways “hams” use radio technology in new and creative ways.
The presentation is directed toward the DIY (do it yourself) movement, which is inspiring a new generation of creators, hackers and innovators.
The message should be helpful for existing members to shape the ways they understand and talk about ham radio.
