Here, I show you how to pack HF gear for wilderness hiking and camping. I detail equipment and simple setup. Rig is a Yaesu FT-817ND, Antenna is a home-brew dipole cut for 20m (40m extensions are not used, but shown), Battery is my trusty 9Ah Sealed Lead Acid (SLA), DC cord is an alligator clip lead. I spent about 5 hours on the hill, and made 9 unique QSOs to Canada and the US via QRP Portable in Vermont (FN32).
Also along for the trip, my Yaesu VX-8 HT, which I used with APRS Digi’s and the SOVARC Shaftsbury, VT Repeater. You may look up my hike path on an APRS server, use call KA1YBS-7 and a date of 20090808

Part 1of 2 I took this video showing the antenna in action and how directional it is. (Which is what you need to concentrate the radios power in one direction). In the video it shows me in my back yard transmitting 5w (146.835mhz) to a repeater that is located about 40 miles away at 6300′ elevation. I am located at about 1400′ elevation and there are hills directly between the repeater and me, so with a rubber duck I would not have been able to make contact. Few weeks ago I made one antenna for portable based on Comet CHA-250 with broadband transformer described in Martin’s G8JNJ document. On the base of antenna is transformer made from four “TDK Ferrite core noise filters” and seven meters of 0.75mm2 isolated copper wire. This antenna is mounted on fishing rod 7m long with transformer mounted on third element (3m) and rest 4 meter of rod is used to make coil for 7 meter copper wire from transformer. So, first 3 meter is RG-58 cabel then transformer and then 4 m coil with wire antenna. Distance between turns in the coil are 20-25mm. Results are great for the purpose and sets very quickly and requires little space. It working from 80m-6m but it is the best from 40m-10m bands. Great thing with this antenna is that it don’t need antenna tuner !!! Our working condition for this video: Rig is Yaesu FT-897D with antenna tuner (tuner not used) We worked on 100W of power on vertical portable HF multi band antenna. This is my first antenna for HF bands and also my first attempt at PSK31 mode. Antenna is a delta loop of almost 20m perimeter.
