Few weeks ago I made one antenna for portable based on Comet CHA-250 with broadband transformer described in Martin’s G8JNJ document. On the base of antenna is transformer made from four “TDK Ferrite core noise filters” and seven meters of 0.75mm2 isolated copper wire. This antenna is mounted on fishing rod 7m long with transformer mounted on third element (3m) and rest 4 meter of rod is used to make coil for 7 meter copper wire from transformer. So, first 3 meter is RG-58 cabel then transformer and then 4 m coil with wire antenna. Distance between turns in the coil are 20-25mm. Results are great for the purpose and sets very quickly and requires little space. It working from 80m-6m but it is the best from 40m-10m bands. Great thing with this antenna is that it don’t need antenna tuner !!! Our working condition for this video: Rig is Yaesu FT-897D with antenna tuner (tuner not used) We worked on 100W of power on vertical portable HF multi band antenna. This tuner minimizes the VSWR between the transmitter & the tuner- it does not reduce or change the VSWR in the feed line to the antenna, that is done by matching the feed line impedance at the antenna end of feed line. Many antennas have a matching network to couple the feed line to the antenna. A poor antenna & feed line is not improved with the tuner only power transfer is maximized – this works for receive and transmit – using impedance matching is always useful for maximum power transfer. This is a new Palstar AT2K tuner that I purchased, and I hope for it to be the last antenna tuner I ever buy. So far it’s living up to that reputation flawlessly. The construction is top notch, the level of attention to detail that Palstar has put into this tuner is stellar, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tuner to anybody, even with the most demanding antenna tuner needs.

This is version 2 of my demo for an arduino antenna tuner. In this version I swapped the coil with a new, somewhat larger one, which has an extra connection about halfway. Using a relay (controlled by the Arduino) the inductance can be switched between half and full. In each position, the capacitor makes a full sweep, while the Arduino monitors the reflection (watch the right meter in the back!). After this, it puts the inductor and capacitor in the position with the lowest SWR. This demo is quite slow, I experimented with different speeds and was able to let it tune within 2 seconds! Inductors and Capacitors

I could make one heck of an antenna tuner!

Check out these Standing Wave Ratio images:

G0FAH Dipole SWR Frequency Plot

This is the standing wave ratio (SWR) plot for my G0FAH style antenna (from the ARRL Classic Wire Antennas volume 2 article ‘5 Bands No Tuner’). I measured it using an MFJ-259B Antenna Analyzer I borrowed from a friend, which saved a lot of time in sampling all the data. Yes, I spun a knob and captured each datum plotted by hand.

For the less technical, here’s what’s happening. A transmitter shoves power (measured in Watts) into a transmission line to the antenna. This is called ‘forward power’. Some power eventually gets to the antenna and radiates into space (this is ‘radiated power’). Some of the power bounces back at the transmitter (‘reverse power’). Finally some of it heats up the transmission line (‘heat’). Power bouncing back is not only harmful to the transmitter (high voltages, mostly), it also results in more heating in the transmission line as the waves reflect back and forth (that’s bad). An ideal SWR is 1:1, and anything over 2:1 is increasingly bad news (the vertical axis on the plot shows the first SWR number, basically the higher the more reverse power, so ‘low points’ are good!).

How to reduce SWR? SWR depends in part on antenna and transmission line materials (copper wire, plastic window material, coaxial cable, insulators). More importantly, adjusting antenna and transmission line geometry (length, layout) affects the SWR. You can tweak the lengths until the low SWR spots match up with the frequencies that you care about.

Finally, an antenna tuner is a box with adjustable coils and capacitors inline and shunted to ground, and this helps match an antenna with too much capacitance or inductance so it doesn’t present high voltages and currents to the transmitter itself… the line heats up still but the transmitter doesn’t get cooked.

SWR Frequency Plot – Diamond X-30A

This is a Standing Wave Ratio plot vs. frequency for a Diamond X-30A VHF/UHF dualband antenna that I have 35′ off the ground at my home operating location, tested with an MFJ-259B. Not surprisingly, it looks just like the specifications.

I’m already using this antenna frequently for local simplex nets (a net is an on-the-radio meeting), one-on-one chats with hams on the go, the South Clackamas County ARES group, the Molalla Amateur Radio Club, as well as talking to hams through any one of the couple dozen local repeaters (local is anything from Salem to Portland to Mt. Hood). It works *much* better than a magmount on the metal roof of the house!

Miracle Antenna w/counterpoise clip

I’ve had very little success tuning the Miracle Antenna for 70cm (Ham UHF) operation. The FT-817 complains about high SWR regardless of my efforts to adjust the length for 3/4th wave. However, after clipping a short lead to the shield I’ve been able to get it into "safe" territory with regard to SWR – at least, under the radio’s threshold for the SWR alert. I don’t know what the panel meter is calibrated against, but out of its full range, it’s 4 bars on FM at 5 watts and 3 bars at the lowest power rating. I think there are 8 bars total. Anyway, it’s very touchy.

I left my rubber duck antenna at Resistor and probably won’t have it in hand for a few days, so I was especially interested to get this up and running. The product is sold as UHF friendly, with reasonable performance on UHF (< 2:1 standing wave ratio) so I suspect there is a bit more study required to tune it but otherwise it’s possible to do so.

In the meantime, while it offends my sensibility to do so, I’ll leave the back cover off and use this counterpoise. The rear radio panel has a lug for grounding, but clipping the counterpoise to this or the shield does not help the tuning (or moves it further out in length than I’ve been checking.)

Note that with this tuner, the antenna detent for VHF is very important – it’s the pass-through circuit on the rotor, and is followed by a couple detents which place the wiper over a nonconductive area.

When time permits (and it’s going to be awhile) I’ll work out something more sensible.

The following is a straight-forward listing of the stages required to construct a shortwave antenna:

Get hold of a simple broom-handle. Altrnatively you can make use of a dowel rod or ready-made plastic tubing that is available from a plumbers or builders merchants The thickness of the of rod is not paramount and anything from about half an inch or better will function perfectly well Create a relatively large base to hold the rod vertically. The base should be heavy enough to keep the rod vertical at all times Get hold of an aluminium disk with a minimum 6 inch diameter. A disk of approximately 12 inches seems to be the optimum size. The disk will provide a capacity hat termination and will assist in reducing any noise pick up Source a quantity of no.16 PVC plastic covered standard wire. If this is not possible then an good alternative is no.16 or no.18 enamel covered copper wire. If this is not available then standard no.18 speaker wire will suffice With one end of the wire connected to the disk, begin winding a consistent coil around the rod. The coils should sit next to each other and be bound tightly to the rod. On completion of binding the rod you should then terminate the wire either by connecting it directly to your antenna tuner or by a proprietary wire connection terminator. Ensure that the wire extending from the base of the rod is as short as possible On completion you can protect your antenna by coating it in proprietary insulation tape or by giving it several coats of protective spray For optimum performance ensure the antenna is placed close to a window, in a garden or veranda. Ensure that the connection from the base is as short as possible You can use it your antenna without a dedicated tuner, however there will be a lack of enhanced core quality if the antenna is not attached to a receiver via a bespoke dedicated tuner Your new antenna is now geared up for use This simple wire-wound antenna will provide a great basis on which to trial your experience. Providing a ground link to both the antenna and tuner will optimise the system. A simple method of creating an artificial ground is to connect a minimum 5M strand of wire which you allow to fall on the floor of the room or garden

This atricle demonstartes what may be achieved with a straighforward home-made antenna, especially if you are limited in your space and budget

The MFJ-941E is designed to match virtually any transmitter to antenna, including dipoles, inverted vees, verticals, mobile whips, beams, radom wires, and others fed by coax lines, balanced lines or a single wire. An eight-position antenna-selector switch provides versatile antenna selection. The MFJ-941D will handle up to 300 watts of transmitter RF output power. The MFJ-941 employs a cross-needle meter so forward power, reflected power and SWR may be read simultaneously. This tuner is in “MINT” condition. The tuner is very clean both inside and outside it’s cabinet. The cabinet has be taken down to bare metal and repainted with RUST-OLEUM “Hammered” finish. All of the position “dent” switches have been sprayed with DeoxIT D5. This spray is very popular and rejuvenates, lubricates and protects electronics. DeoxIT states more than a Contact Cleaner and chemically improves electronic connections. All of the tuner’s components have been tighten and re soldered (as to need) to restore as of just leaving the factory. The tuner shows no appearance of any burnt conditions from any type of arcing either RF output or lightning. The meter lamp can be powered by a 12 Vdc source. Use a 2.1 coaxial plug with the center conductor of the plug connected to the positive and the sleeve connected to ground. Please note: This cable and plug has been constructed and will come with the tuner. The Meter Lamp ON/OFF switch will activate the meter lamp. The MFJ-941E utilizes a cross-needle meter
