swling.com A good link to get started.. www.ssrsi.org Lots of links here for when you really get into it! www.jr.com A rundown on various features try to get a radio with SSB capability! SSB stands for “Single Side Band”. This particular band is not a carrier of frequencies but rather a derivative of them, hence it’s name “side”. If we took one AM frequency and dissected it, we’d find that it consists of even more bands, in fact two: USB (Upper Side Band) and LSB (Lower Side Band). Not all shortwave radios can receive SSB signals. If your shortwave radio doesn’t read SSB, then when you tune to a channel that’s transmitting on this band, what you hear will not be understandable. This channel usually permits reception of amateur radio and military/commercial/maritime communication. High-end shortwave radios have the ability to receive SSB signals.

I’ve been into shortwave listening for years, have a Grundig Satellit 800 and a Kaito KA1102 portable. I highly recommend both. I also recommend people keep a CB transmitter around or get your Ham license and a transceiver (even better) for worst case scenario communications.

I’ve been talking about SW for some time on various channels. Remember, even if the entire North American grid went down, you could still get news from Radio Australia, BBC, etc. Btw, I know you are in CA :here on the west coast Radio Australia comes in in the morning from 1 am on on 9580 khz.

Mr. Demensha23, please excuse my ignorance. I hope you might indulge me in a general question not specifically related to any particular video. I have seen your channel and I am wondering what it is that you are getting prepared for. It seems like you spend alot of time preparing for pandemics, economic depression and inflation. How long have you been concerned about these issues and is there currently a specific and neccessary reason to respond in this manner?

@ksy3nw9w4m6shvj2 When the Federal Reserve injected 2.4 trillion into the U.S. banking system in Oct 2008 that kind of put me, and quite a few folks on notice. Hank Paulson the Sec of the treasury wrote a book confirming this. The Pandemic of 2009? Doc’s were sweating over that one, I know I work in a hospital. Luckily the virus was mild.1000pt drop in the markets? austerity measures in Europe? I can’t predict what can come down the tracks, but I can be predictably prepared.

@demensha23 Thanks for the response and the book recommendation. I agree that there is prudence in preparing. I enjoy your videos on gear, and firearms as well. I am, however, concerned that trying to prepare for so much could actually hurt ones quality of life. I feel an undercurrent of fear that if left unchecked could lead to a survivalist obsession. This is in itself is quite addictive behavior and can be contagious to other people around us.
