I’ve just ordered one for $20 with a E4000 tuner but yes they are good at
changing things. I’ll have to have a look in to the hack. Are you on
Nzscanners ? or any other forums. cheers

Seems pretty good reception for Waikato North using a TV antenna… When I
lived in Huntly, before going digital, I used to get Auck South and Metro
pretty clear using a discone which I was fairly happy with. just want to
point out only Auckland, Wellington and CHCH areas are digital/ encrypted.

Hmm… bugger looks like they have gone belly up. use to be nzscanners org
nz but there is now a wiki at radiowiki org nz which is worth a look.

yeah I had a look on trademe but they don’t list the chipsets. I have found
a truck load in china for cheap which I may look at importing. I have seen
people make a up converter for the lower frequencies. Cheers.

I got mine from a website called dealextreme, but I’ve heard they’re not
selling the same stick anymore. I think ebay is the place to buy them these
days. My stick is the “EZcap USB 2.0 DVB-T/DAB/FM dongle” with the RTL2832U
and E4000 tuner chip; these chips work the best apparently. The range on
mine is approximately ~53Mhz – 1.7Ghz with a small gap in the 1.1Ghz region.

Hi, do you mean radio hardware? It’s not a hardware radio, it’s a software
radio from a re-purposed TV Tuner USB dongle. Look up rtl-sdr on google.
Yeah this is tuned to about 75.3Mhz.

Yeah I don’t think you’ll find that tuner on trademe. If you’re importing a
lot make sure you get a sample first, cos sometimes they send something
slightly different to what was advertised which may not be compatible with
rtl-sdr. I’ve been meaning to try make an upconverter one day when I have
time. Also, I’ve heard of an experimental hack which involves soldering a
long wire antenna to pin one of the 2832 chip. Then you can get HF 0-30Mhz
    without an upconverter.

Yeah I know it’s a software defined radio, but wasn’t sure if you were
using a Diy I/Q mixer or a usb stick etc… Where did you get your stick
from? and what is the usable frequency range on these sticks? Cheers

Oh, I was using a SDR# plugin called Auto Tuner which automatically tunes
to a peak in the spectrum. It also has a ‘ignore’ feature which I used on
the central local oscillator spike to stop the auto tuner always tuning to
    the middle.

Good luck, hope they send the right one. The hack is called using the
“direct sampling mode” if you want to look into it. I only recently got
into scanning a few months ago when I received my USB stick, so never heard
of NZScanners, can you PM a link? I can’t seem to find it on Google. The
only other forum I visit is the Reddit rtlsdr one.
