Yaesu 817ND with LDG z817 Tuner that’s NOT working correctly.
Measurements made at the input and output of an antenna tuner at 20 meters. The antenna in this video is the G5RV Jr (short version) that is cut for 40 meters and up. I find the Wikipedia description a very good one on “Antenna Tuner”.
The G5RV is a 20M antenna which works efficiently on 20M. The fact that unscrupulous marketeers are selling these antennas to people who don’t have a clue about antenna design is not a technical problem but a problem of ethics. I am sure that if you conducted your tests on a dipole fed with a balanced transmission line to an efficient balun you would find the antenna tuner works just fine and the output power would be in excess of 90%.
How did I know you are HAM as well? -Me too. -Since was about 12! My key has been quiet lately, but like to work 20 meters. 20 meters is really my thing. I ran about 800 watts input from 572Bs -great tube -indestructable. My ERP was about 1000-1200 PEP as i had some gain from my odd dipole.
Yep – too many hobbies here – I too have been on since 1963 starting with my general ticket. 20 meters is all I operate except for a little UHF with my buddies around El Paso. I would love to build with the 572B but never had any. I have built several amps with 4-400A’s and 4CX1000A – got an old Collins 30K-1 that I built the 4CX1000A amp into. I will have to do a YouTube video on it soon. Thanks.
These tests were on 20 meters but I do not have a balun at the end of the coax where it meets the 300 ohm vertical feed – thanks for the comments – I will have to get or build a balun and install it at the end of my coax and see what difference it makes and post that as an update. Tuner has already been sent to LDG. They told me to send it back after I went through with tech support to confirm it was the tuner
I go the tuner back form LDG it worked for 3weeks then quit again…. will be sending it back again…
I know this is an old vid, but I was looking for some troubleshooting info for my Z817. Different problem on mine: it won’t detect any RF so refuses to tune at all. But my 817 is definitely putting out RF as I’ve had several QSOs. Works fine for a few weeks then just stops. Second time it’s done it to me and I, too, will be sending it back. I’m starting to wonder if I should just find a manual tuner.
