Modification of an Alinco DR-635 dual band radio (144/440Mgz) to expanded transmit capability (MARS/CAP) 137Mgz-175Mgz, 420Mgz-480Mgz range. Their are many other dual band radios with the same capabilities and more, this one is just one I stuck with as a simple, easy to use, no frills mobile radio. There are many other radio bands to use, this is a small slice I like to use because of its proximity to Fire/Law/EMS/Govt frequencies for monitoring. It’s close to FRS, MURS, and GMRS frequencies as well. Nothing wrong with our CB and longer wavelength cousins, antenna construction and size limitation gets a little challenging when you are trying to be discreet in those bands. Don’t want to spend the money either.

Setting up crossband repeat

Just RXing to GB3VT VHF Repeater, The following is took from “QRZ.COM” GB3VT, RV58, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. GB3VT is a 2 metre repeater located at 273 metres, 887 feet above sea level, QRA Locator IO83WA, in the City of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. The GB3VT repeater first became operational from its original site in December 1980 and has now been operational from its present site since 1995 and is co-sited with two other repeaters: GB3ST on 70cm and GB3SE on 23cm. GB3VT transmits on 145.725 MHz and receives on 145.125 MHz. Both the receiver and transmitter use full decode and encode Continuous Tone Carrier Squelch System at a frequency of 103.5 Hz. The Transmitter, Receiver and Repeater Control Logic are all-purpose designed and homebuilt, the timeout is currently set at 3 Minutes. The repeater also makes use of a home built 8 Cavity Duplexer, and the repeater delivers a total of 25 watts effective radiated power from a single colinear type of aerial. To fully access the repeater it has always been a requirement of the station wishing to access, to transmit 3 to 4 seconds of good audio of at least plus and minus 1 kHz deviation. Stations using less than the required minimum deviation will fail to access. In line with the now adopted United Kingdom 2 metre 12.5 kHz channel spacing, the repeater receiver has 12.5 kHz Intermediate Frequency Crystal Filters fitted and the transmitter peak deviation has also been reduced accordingly. To make the most

This video was taken on Saturday 23rd October 2010. I was set up on a hilltop monitoring the amateur radio experiments on board the Horus9 balloon. Carried aloft was the tracking computer, a cross band 2m/70cm repeater, a simplex parrot repeater on 2m and an APRS tracker on 2m. The launch coincided with the WIA National Field Day and the cross band repeater was very busy with field day stations making contacts. In this video you can see the Dl-Fldigi software decoding the telemetry from the balloon, the decoded telemetry was then uploaded to the tracking server via a WiFi internet connection.

I have taken my 2 meter portable out with me on Lee many times. The closest receive station for the Milwaukee 91 (146.91 – ) repeater is the main site which is about 25 or so miles from the area I ride in. My ham radio friends affectionately call Lee “Lima-Echo-Echo” the ham radio horse. One day I plan to use my Kenwood mobile radio as a cross band repeater and then I will take a 440 hand held out with me and see how that works out. The portable I took with me is a Yaesu FT-270 2 meter monoband. I have a “tiger tail” wire attached to the outside ring of the SMA antenna connector which provides a little better ground plane.
