Here is a short pan across our campsite at 5600′ atop Santiago Peak in Orange County, CA. Darin and I setup a nice HF + VHF station the previous night. Equipment was a YaesU FT-857d and a Kenwood TS-520. The antenna was a 102″ G5RV setup as inverted-v. The metal pipes you see sticking out of the ground are viewfinders for popular landmarks like Catalina Island, Mt Palomar and Mt Wilson.

This is my new temporary QTH at Tampere (south-west Finland). I am testing a mobile whip that’s on the window cell. The square-shaped magnetic mount fits like a glove and holds like glue. 20m/10m/2m/70cm/23cm all on the same antenna. I was suprised to hear strong signals on 20 meters, the whip is only 1m long! Of course, it goes without saying that this isnt the best method to do mobile HF without permanently securing the radio. The radio is being held in place by rubber grip pad. However, since I do much traveling in rental vehicles, this is the risk I take to enjoy mobile HF. But am mindful of the laws of inertia if I slam the breaks! Thank you Mr. Newton.

www.kcomm.biz This video shows how to install a NMO type antenna mount..It was mounted on a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck at Kcomm the ham radio store in San Antonio, Tx..I aquired my brother Tim KE5CFZ to help me.. The NMO mount requires a 3 hole which was drilled thru the roof just in front of the cargo light assembly..The coax was then run under the headliner, down under the inside trim, then under the kick panel to behind the drivers seat.. The coax was cut to length, pl-259 was soldered on & a Tram dual band antenna was screwed onto the NMO mount.. The antenna was tested with an analyzer & all SWR checks were good on VHF & UHF.. Contacting Finnish station, Pekka OH1O, from Vancouver, WA, on 30 Meters CW using a barefoot Yaesu FT-857D at 100 Watts, to a small Yaesu ATAS 120 mobile screwdriver antenna mounted on my car trunk. I used the 60Hz AF DSP filter to make the receive clearer. Signal report 569 both ways. Contact was made at about 1PM Pacific Time on January 10, 2010.

Affichage du FT-857D lors de l’accord automatique de l’antenne ATAS-120. Display when ATAS-120 anntenna is tuning for best SWR
My ATAS-120A was acting quirky and locking up so I disassembled it for inspection. BE VERY CAUTIOUS if you attempt to do the same. The ATAS antenna needs a very good RF ground to function properly. Most problems that people encounter with them are ground related. Another issue is that the center pin of the PL-259 style base connector it uses is slightly smaller than other center pins resulting in a loose electrical contact with the antenna mount. One way to correct this is to bend the prongs of the mating connector inward slightly so that a good contact is maintained. Thank you KB5WIA for posting a very good guide on this antenna!
